Basic Wikipedia information at:

In extreme brevity: one of the most famous Spanish Baroque painters being part of the golden age in the court of King Philip IV. He is especially renowned for the large number of portraits emanating from the Spanish royal family (in particular Las Meninas).

This thread will hopefully serve as a place to discuss and add to aspects of Velázquez's life and times. E.g. major events, the history of Spain and its culture.

AJ I'm most familiar as I'm sure is the case with others with his portraits of Juan de Pareja and Pope Innocent X, but I hadn't known or realized who he was until now.
