Julia | 18 comments So in 2016 I failed miserably, mostly because my first real job collided with writing my thesis for the better part of the year - and actually still is. But by January I should have gotten writing it out of the way and I will be all set to give this challenge another go! I'll start collecting topics now, but some of it will likely change around. Happy reading!

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Mort is my favourite Discworld book - I hope you love it! A lot of people seem to be reading Burial Rites for that prompt - I read it this year, and it was definitely atmospheric. I'm currently reading Les Misérables and absolutely loving it, so I hope you do too!

message 3: by Julia (new)

Julia | 18 comments Mort is actually going to be my fist Discworld Novel - so overdue! I've heard that it's a good place to start? Would you agree with that?

Yes, Burial Rites just seemed like the obvious choice - it came to mind right away. I'm not even sure if there is another novel on my TBR that would fit.

I'm hoping I'll love Les Mis as much as I love the musical - fingers crossed!

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I read the Discworld books in order (I've not yet finished, I'm up to #31, I think), but I know a lot of people suggest to read them out of order. It's so hard to know what the best way is, as you can only read them for the first time one particular way. Personally, I could only ever read starting at #1, but I think Mort is still pretty accessible if you haven't read any others. Death is my favourite character in the series - he's awesome!

message 5: by Julia (new)

Julia | 18 comments Thanks for the input! I'll think it over - whatever I decide, I'll definitely start the Discworld books this year!

message 6: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I can definitely understand why people suggest to read out of order, as the first two books are far from the best in the series. :) I just get twitchy thinking about it ... I can be a little rigid when it comes to following the rules!

message 7: by Julia (new)

Julia | 18 comments That's exactly how I am usually when it comes to books :D I've just heard the suggestion so often... And I've heard that Mort is kind of the first of the death novels so that made me feel a lot better about this :)

message 8: by Sam (new)

Sam | 316 comments I love Burial Rites, one of my all time favorites. I have Hannah Kent's new book The Good People in my challenge for 2017.

I'm also excited to dive into VE Schwab and have the first book in the series A Darker Shade of Magic on my challenge list for next year; hopefully if I like that I can join in on A Gathering of Shadows which it seems like a lot of people have on their challenge list.

message 9: by Julia (new)

Julia | 18 comments A Darker Shade of Magic was great - I honestly don't know why I did not get around to reading A Gathering of Shadows last year, so that's definitely at the very top of next years list. I hope you enjoy the series, too!

I didn't know about Hannah Kent's new book, thanks! I also loved Burial Rites and visited the place where the murder took place in Iceland, it was amazing to be able to really see the landscape as it's described in the book!

Thanks Katie :) I've been meaning to read Stardust for years - or anything Neil Gaiman for that matter! It's high time...

All of you are getting me so excited for Burial Rites that I'm seriously considering to toss my resolution of reading in order overboard and to skip ahead to week 15 :D ...already. That didn't take long.

Iceland is also one of the places I want to try to visit this year! If I do I'll make sure to check that place out - It sounds amazing!

message 13: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Iceland is an incredibly magical place! I went in the beginning of April and it was great to see spring start in the South, but the North still in high snow. Plus, there weren't a lot of tourists and we got to see auroras 4 nights in a row! I definitely recommend April or September if you want to see them...
