Pamela (bibliohound) | 359 comments This was a bit of a disappointment. It started with a promising scenario that set it up well but sort of limped off into nothing. The dialogue was tortuous - the characters spent so much time avoiding discussing what was happening - and the style of the narrative was very ponderous. It could have been really sharp and original.

I have read Daisy Miller, which I liked a little better, but I think James' style will always put me off.

Patricia | 199 comments I didn't much care for this. I agree with Pamela on all her points. This just didn't go anywhere. I've read quite a bit by James, most of it required college reading. This is the worst.

Kevin H | 38 comments I too failed to embrace the "classic" status of this one. I'm still willing to give James another shot (just not any time soon).
