Scot | 639 comments There are some pretty good recommendations. I can't wait to see what makes the final vote?

me either. I'm up for buddy reads for almost any of these that don't make it.

Nightcrawlers - Robert McCammon

message 55: by Perry (new)

Perry Lake | 335 comments The Lovecraft tales mentioned above are great, but not actually ghost stories. May I submit The Tomb? And here's a free copy

message 56: by Sara (new)

Sara (cheechako16) I'm voting The Willows as well!

yeah I would agree. I don't think he wrote any ghost stories, did he?

Don't Look Now Selected Stories of Daphne Du Maurier by Daphne du Maurier"

I've been meaning to read this story and The Birds for ages. I do live in Du Maurier country after all, but have only read a couple of hers. So I'll second it.

As for the Lovecraft stories, I think we were all just piling on to someone else's comment and going off on a tangent. I can't recall any ghost stories by him (The Tomb isn't one either), but I've not read all of his stories so can't say for sure.

Actually this thread is just for suggestions. A poll will soon go up for everyone to cast their vote for the group read. Don't forget to vote for your fav.
Welcome to HA. :)

Should a story by Blackwood get picked, three of the stories in that collection can be found in Tales of Terror and Darkness, of which I have a copy. The stories are:

The Glamour of the Snow
The Transfer
Accessory before the Fact

Having not read them, I have no idea how good these are.

message 64: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Wildflower | 58 comments What about Charles Dickens? There is a book with the Complete Ghost Stories.
I haven't read any of them, but I find it really cool that HE wrote ghost stories. Some of them are: The queer chair, A madman's manuscript, The goblins who stole a sexton, The ghosts of the mail and The baron of Grogzwig

Rachel Bea (gekrepten) | 1761 comments I'll nominate a few.

The Empty House by Algernon Blackwood.

On The Brighton Road by Richard Middleton

I only read The Horse of the Invisible - I really liked it. It was in the Dark Detectives anthology. The other two, I've never read but they sound good...

That actually would be apropos seeing as the ghost stories Dickens wrote were done as part of the English tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas time. Even if you haven't read it you must be familiar with Dickens' most famous Christmas ghost story.

message 69: by Sean (new)

Sean | 8 comments We can't really be nominating short stories alone right?

I'll go with Dark Companions by Ramsey Campbell as an anthology suggestion

almost all of the stories nominated are public domain = always free.

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

Stephen King's "The Reach" is one of his best.

message 73: by C.C. (new)

C.C. Campaign (caycecampaign) | 4 comments I recently finished and reviewed this book that is a collection of short stories called At The Cemetery Gates: Year One. Each story is different, but there are a few ghost stories that are pretty good and they don't go over 5 pages.
