15.10 - The Plane! The Plane!

December 7, 1941. 75 years ago, The Pacific Clipper completes the first around-the-world flight by a commercial airliner. Read a book with an aircraft* on the cover.
*An aircraft is a machine that is able to fly by gaining support from the air that has the ability to carry a person. This includes hot air balloons, dirigibles (blimps), airplanes, biplanes, helicopters, gliders, hang gliders, seaplanes, jets, space shuttles, manned rockets. It does NOT include paper airplanes, kites, party balloons or parachutes.
ex. The Wright Brothers by David McCullough In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume A Dangerous Place (Maisie Dobbs, #11) by Jacqueline Winspear
Required: Include the cover.

Bea Is there enough of a plane to approve this cover? Tail Spin by Catherine Coulter

message 6: by Coralie (new)

Coralie Would The Fractal Prince by Hannu Rajaniemi work? The bobble towards the nose looks like a cockpit which would imply that it is manned.

Cloudbound (Bone Universe, #2) by Fran Wilde
It's a fantasy novel, so the physics of it is a little unclear, but in the first book of the series, it was clear that the wings were intended to carry the wearer on long-distance flights, sort of like a hang-glider.

Yes, according to the author's website they are mechanical wings. That seems to fall under "a machine that is able to fly by gaining support from the air"

Barbara ★ | 1573 comments Would this work? It looks like some kind of space shuttle. It looks big enough to hold passengers/pilots. And I don't think a rocket would have "wings". Though I could be wrong.

That appears to be a missile flying over a horizon- maybe water or sand below the atmosphere. There does not seem to be anything space-related. The book synopsis says: "a missile is heading right for Mecca on the first day of Ramadan.
That doesn't work.

Covers do not need to be verified.

That appears to be a blimp. What is your concern?

I'm sorry, I thought since it was a cover related task that it would be best to have a book verified rather than have an issue down the road when claiming the book for the task.

There's not enough detail to confirm that it is an aircraft, sorry it doesn't work.
