Annerlee | 2872 comments Ha ha. I didnt realise I was such an enigma!

I ran away to Austria when I was 20. I lived in Austria for 12 years (Vienna) and only spoke german for that time .. except to my children... My husband spoke no english at all.

When I moved back to the uk I could only think in german and speaking english was a real problem. Everyone spoke to me really slowly because they thought I didnt understand lol.
Altho my husband now speaks both languages, it's more natural to speak german at home. Our german involves quite a bit of Austrian dialect.
I read Italian sometimes to keep my hand in... Very slowly... Ditto french, which I learnt at school..

Hope that clears things up a little ; )

31: If you could meet anyone famous, infamous, notorious…? Roland Deschain
The Eyes of the Dragon
The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King
Finished 10 Jan '17
I read this as a tribute to Roland Deschain, a fictional character from Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' series. The book features another character named Roland and has many elements in common with the series, especially when compared to Wizard and Glass, book 4 of The Dark Tower.

To list a few examples: The book features the 'immortal' wizard, Randall Flagg, and his technique of becoming 'dim', Witch of the Coos, the Barony, the setting of in-World, writing in 'Great Letters'. The book also has a similar magical fantasy feel to it. I can imagine Roland Deschain living in a future version of this country.

Janice (jamasc) | 59953 comments I think that Eyes of the Dragon is loosely connected to The Dark Tower series, as many of his books are. Debra would likely be able to confirm that, though.

Arkwright by Allen Steele

Majority of book is set in the future..

Sarah | 18550 comments You're future book sounds interesting.

I'm pretty sure we're supposed to make a new post when we've read the book as opposed to when currently reading. I am posting when I start a book in just a very brief, informal way then writing a new post in the required format when I have completed it. Otherwise if you go back and edit your currently reading posts to say read, it won't generate a notification that you have finished the book. And Janice and everyone else won't know to check out your thread.

Annerlee | 2872 comments Sarah wrote: "You're future book sounds interesting ..."

It was, I really quite enjoyed it. It was nice to find some well written 'hard scifi' and I think I'll try more by the same author.

The only criticism was that it was written in 4 sections that felt a bit disjointed. When I'd finished, I found out it was originally published as a series of 4 short stories. I wish I'd known before I started - it would have changed the way I approached it.

I generally don't research the background to a book beforehand - maybe that's a problem, but I like to let the book speak for itself to a certain extent.

I've also heard that you should read a book at least twice before you form an opinion of it, which is a valid point I suppose... But there are soo many other books I want to read!!

Dilemma dilemma...

Thanks Cherie. The toppler certainly helped me along.

The last 2 of Clarke's books I've read have felt the same... good ideas, but flat and impersonal somehow. Maybe it was the style of the time? I think I'll wait awhile before trying another.

message 46: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think you are right. Maybe it was the style of the time. I was an avid science-fiction fan for a long time and just stopped because everything seemed the same. There were many authors of the time that I just couldn't get into. I jumped into fantasy and never really want back to it although I stayed at the edges. Clark always seemed to me very dry. I need some adventure and warm, likable characters. I don't mind a little romance, but not graphic.

message 47: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2872 comments Cherie wrote: " Clark always seemed to me very dry. I need some adventure and warm, likable characters. I don't mind a little romance, but not graphic."

Well put Cherie, I agree. Some of the more modern science fiction is more rounded and warmer, which I prefer. Clark is so highly regarded though, I felt I should educate myself and read some : p

I find Fantasy a bit hit and miss, it's such a wide genre and there seems to be a lot of cliched fantasy out there.

message 48: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I see reviews from hard core science fiction readers that gush on and on about some of the old, classic writers, and I think the same thing. Maybe I should go back and give them a try again. Every time I have done so, I came away feeling that something was wrong in me that I could not like them. There is too much other, more interesting stuff out there for me to keep punishing myself trying Clark and his old time cronies over and over. Guys like Scalzi are much more entertaining.

Yeah, fantasy can be hit and miss, but it is such a vast genre, there is always something worth reading, just around the next isle at the library or bookstore.
