WE THREE
,
We're not a Crowd, Were Not Even Company. My Echo, My Shadow and Me.

Part 1

✔1/12 Task 27. Do you have a tattoo? No
Read a book with a tattoo on the cover.
Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs Moon Called, Patricia Briggs 6 Jan

A refreshing change from vampires and zombie books. "Were" culture is pretty weeeird!

✔2/12 - Task 12. Do you have a pet? What is it? Sadly petless. Had cats almost all of my life, but not at the moment. Have to adopt Debra's two cats for now. Read a book featuring that type of pet.

The Dalai Lama's Cat 10 Feb

✔3/12 - Task 30. Have you been to Europe? No
Read a book set in a European country you would like to visit.= France

The Chalk Circle Man, Fred Vargas 6 Mar

✔4/12 - Task 2. What is your favourite sport? On television I like to watch golf and gymnastics, but in person they kinda drag on. In person horse racing is a pretty exciting sport. I used to enjoy horse-backing riding. These days my most strenuous activity is walking. Read a book that is about your favourite sport.

Dick Francis was the Queen's Jockey from 1953 to 1957. He wrote several mysteries about horses, racing, jockeys, track personalities, etc. To me it is a fun education, all about the horsey set.

Dead Cert 11 Mar

✔5/12 - Task 3 What colour are your eyes? Gray with yellow around the pupils. My driver's license says they are green, and they do look it, especially when I wear certain colors of clothing. Vanity dictates that I wear those certain colors! Read a book where the colour of your eyes is the main colour of the cover.

Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos (Theodosia Throckmorton, #1) by R.L. LaFevers Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos 12 Mar

✔6/12 - Task 4. Have you ever had a broken bone? I don't particularly like gnawing on bones, so yes it is very irritating when I get a broken bone in my Chicken Divan...Oh wait...Yes, I broke my wrist in a roller skating mishap. Read a book with the word “Bone” in the title.

Winter's Bone 14 Mar

✔7/12 Task 36. If you had to lose one of the 5 senses, which would you prefer it to be? Smell

The Smell of the Night, Andrea Camilleri 29 Mar

✔8/12 - Task 1. What is your name? Almeta Merle Marrs (hehehe). The name Almeta supposedly came from a character in a book. I have searched for such a book in vain. The Marrs are Scots, thus my genealogy investigations use the ID MenFromMarrs. Books with the spelling with two Rs are pretty slim pickings. So I went with Merle, even though years later I found that the birth certificate has a spelling of Myrle. I guess the doctors/nurses thought that was a better spelling than the parental version! Read a book that contains one of your names in some way.

Merle: A Novella And Other Stories 16 Apr

✔9/12 Task 6. What is your favourite book? Grrr! Reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy was the only time I ever actually called in sick to work so that I could continue the adventure! I recommend Perfume: The Story of a Murderer to everyone, and have converted many a non-reader to its enjoyment. I keep extra reading copies to loan out, so that no one harms or loses my precious original!

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer Patrick Süskind's other books are less than 175 pages.

The “Readers Also Enjoyed” choice was likely recommended because they were both first written in German. Still I kinda like the symmetry of the extended title "The Story of...", don't you?

Going to the Dogs: The Story of a Moralist 18 Apr

✔10/12 - Task 15. What is your shoe size? ) 8 – Select that number of books on your TBR, put them into the Fruit Machine. Read the one that is selected.

Tropic of Fear, Ron Terpening 20 Apr

✔11/12 - Task 5. What is your favourite movie? This is not fair! Blade Runner, Fifth Element, Ghost. OR Lock, Stock and Two Barrels, Kill Bill. OR Harold and Maude Or Big Fish OR Lord of the Rings. How can one choose?

Fruit Machine sez choose Big Fish by Daniel Wallace, which I have already read.

Reading another one of his: Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician 1 May

✔12/12 - Task 25. What is your favourite genre? Mystery

The Mystery of the Yellow Room, Gaston Leroux 2 May

We picked the same book for accident.
The Neto Wolf book is pretty good. I love the audio books and only have 2 out of the 27 available from my library left to listen to. I've started collecting the others in paperback.
I'm tired. I can't remember the other things I wanted to chime in on. I'll be back...

Ooops! The mass market paperback said 192.

I'll switch to Dark Harvest, Norman Partridge.

I'd like that.

I read Boxer, Beetle by this same author and found a lot of it baffling. Yet around the same time in 2013, I marked this one to read. So I must have thought I could try again.

If we get together and talk about it, I might comprehend the crazy parts better!☻

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I'm in for a buddy read. Gives me time to locate a copy.

Most of my books are ones I own and several I am sure I can get from the library but there are a handful I will have to really gopher for. I opened my Nook last and found a few covers that I can use for some answers that I have library books tagged. Just need to update my list again.

The Dalai Lama's Cat 10 Feb

Always been interested in the 14th Dali Lama's struggles with China and his exile to India. Nothing of these politics are reported here.

Some of the simpler tenets of Tibetan Buddhism are depicted through the anthropomorphic mind of a cat and his daily meanderings.

Cute book.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11460 comments ✔3/12 - Task 30. Have you been to Europe? No
Read a book set in a European country you would like to visit.= France

The Chalk Circle Man, Fred Vargas 6 Mar

Well, most reviewers gave this a low rating, but I actually gave it five stars.

Mystery readers are usually dazzled by the detective who spots the clues that no one else notices in order to solve the puzzle. Forensic oddities, methodical investigation, observant busy-bodies, etc. Fostering nothing but frustration of his cohorts (and readers too) Commissaire Adamsberg pays no attention to any of that. He is strictly a "by his gut feelings" kind of guy.

Most unusual crime solver!

Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos (Theodosia Throckmorton, #1) by R.L. LaFevers Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos 12 Mar

I am drawn to novels concerning archaeology, especially Egyptology.

I don't feel that I am the target audience to fairly rate this book. I'm sure a younger person would love this and all of the other adventures that Theodosia gets up to. At times I was reminded of Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce.

I would like to have learned more about the museum's objects.

Thank you Cherie for the recommendation. I liked the read, and it filled a slot on my "Buy a Vowel" challenge.

message 40: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes, Theodosia is aimed at a much younger target audience, but I am not sure that it really exists today. It was a fun read and I liked the following stories too. There was a little more about the museum's objects in the next stories, but not much more detail. I liked how she had to figure out how to keep the curses from affecting things. The jam sandwiches still make me laugh.

Family code of law trumps all other authority. It's the only way for everyone to survive in the backwoods of the Ozarks. The rules can be harsh and breaking them brings on an even harsher consequence. Family metes out punishment, family offers consolation. Family is everything....until....
