Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Sally, I know exactly what you mean. I really don't want to take my cell phone on my wal, my bike ride, my drive to the store, "just in case".

Chances are, if I did crash my bike, the cell would be the first casualty, anyways.

My kids will respond to a text right away usually. My daughter will seldom answer her phone.

Donitello | 148 comments The Chinese definitely don't share your view, Jackie:

As I understand it, when there's a traffic accident, the FIRST order of business is to call... um, I forget, a lawyer? your insurance provider?... to come and document the scene in order to prove later that you weren't at fault and/or were injured. Many accidents, of course, involve bikes. The cyclists will often remain on the ground until their posse gets there. Traffic be damned.

Nice picture, Doni.

*knocks on wood* I haven't been in a crash since the days before cell phones, so I can't say about now, but then, the lady I hit (my 1983 Blazer was out of brake fluid) lied to the police when she did file her report, and b/c her account conflicted with me and the three witnesses her case was thrown out and I was off the hook. The lack of technology saved my arse that day.

Donitello | 148 comments For years I've kept a disposable camera in my glovebox in case of accident. Never had to use it, but deeply believe that seeing me jump out of the car and start snapping away would give the other party pause. Even if I'm in the wrong, it will probably keep the case against me from "expanding." That's the idea, anyway.

Leslie | 777 comments One thing I'm really sick of is my daughter texting while we're talking! UGH!! I'm constantly telling her to put the phone down and actually converse. We drop a friend off and as soon as we pull out of the neighborhood and she has to text him or her. Then when I tell her no texting so we can talk and she has to text her friends and tell them she can't text for a while and then they have to answer of course! It's crazy!

I might be weird and it can be annoying, but most of the time I like it when people talk on their phones and I can hear them. Anything I can hear without making an effort--like eavesdropping--is fair game as far as I'm concerned--for my listening entertainment, and it is, it really is sometimes. I like to hear people talk when they don't know I'm listening. I'm nosy and I like to hear what their saying and I like to hear all different kinds of people talk for writing dialogue. Talk in front of me and it goes in my ears, my brain, my mind, my journal, my books--all there for the taking. So gab away guy with the loud voice two tables over--I'm taking notes. :)

I've said this before but I'll say it again. I have a colleague who prob graduated high school in 2003 and college in 2007. He can not have a full conversation with me without texting and checking his phone compulsively. It makes my skin crawl.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments clarification: sally is not talking about me. i did NOT go to college and i graduated from HS in 1982. i still in fact may make her skin crawl at various times though
