Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments You'd like to learn German? Good choice! Not easy, but there are more difficult languages to study. I've had it in school, for 7(!) years and we live close to the German border, but I still feel insecure when I have to speak it... So before we make a trip there, I usually read a few books in German, to refresh my knowledge of the language;).

Lives your mom abroad? Or at the other side of the country? (the Netherlands is so small that we can still see people regularly when they live on the other side of the country;)…).

Sarah | 18550 comments @Eslbeth - I too want to learn German. I learnt a bit before we went to Austria last month (my app didn't have Austrian but i know it's pretty close). I'm off to Amsterdam at the weekend and have switched to learning Dutch on the app. And I was struck by how similar the two were, more so written down than pronunciation. I'm pretty sure i won't be saying a word of Dutch while I'm away. It's hard. But at least i might be able to understand the odd word here and there, especially on a menu.

I chose German because I'm of German descent and thought it would be cool to learn the language of my ancestors. I remember when I was a kid at family gatherings hearing the older generations speaking it, and wondering what they were saying.

My mom and dad are halfway across the country, about 1500 miles. Of course, we talk a lot on the phone, but there's times I just want to see her in person, oh and eat her cooking, lol. We visited them in July and she made a lot of my favorites, it was wonderful! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Yes, German and Dutch have a lot in common - only don't say that when you are in Amsterdam! We Dutch don't have too many fond memories of the German's 'visit' in the 1940's. And some people have a hard time (still!) getting over that. In the east of the Netherlands (closer to the German border, where I live ), that is different, probably because we face Germans on a more regular basis (and most of them are a lot nicer than the average Dutchman...)

Yes, that would be great, to learn the language of your ancestors!

Janice (jamasc) | 59924 comments My grandparents emigrated to Canada in 1912 from Russia. They were Russian-Germans. My mother didn't speak English until she started school. After I came back from a holiday in Austria, I asked her why she never taught us how to speak German. She said that my dad didn't know any German, so she never spoke it in front of him.

That must have been so hard and scary for your mom to start school without knowing the language. I see it every year at the school where I work and my heart goes out to them, but its amazing how quickly they can pick up a second language.

She never mentioned it. She went to school in a one room schoolhouse and had lots of older siblings there to keep her company.

Hmmm. Good question!
Well, I think I'd like to go to a country estate in England, maybe for one of those weekends for a ball or maybe spend a fortnight at Christmas. I'd also like to witness a historical event like maybe Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, or help with the underground railroad. However, I wouldn't want to stick around for the Civil War. I think I'd also like to head west, but only by rail not a wagon train, I think that would be a bit much for me to handle.

On these time travels, we would need to do research about where we wanted to arrive and on what day. Travellingwould be quite a problem in the 1800s, not only from a time point of view. You'd need to get hold of multiple maps or a guide from somewhere otherwise you' d be lost... Unless you arranged for an internet connection with the future Lol. Just a thought...

I agree, Annerlee, the logistics of it all could be a nightmare. For instance, I want to arrive in Gettysburg for Lincoln's speech and not pop in at the battlefield during the battle at a later date. I like the idea of an internet connection with the future. It would be really handy to google stuff, lol.

We'd just have to be careful to Google in private, or risk being arrested as witches...

I put down that I would like to time travel to the 1850s. I have no idea why, nor where I would like to visit. None at all.

Lori Z | 2089 comments Okay, I'm all set. I found books for every question (see messages 2 and 3) and a lot of them came from my tbr pile so that's good. Now if I could just finish a book for every site for this year I'll be ready to go come January 1st.
Looking forward to a new year and a new challenge! :)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Your list of books under the tattoo question intrigued me. I don't see any tattoos on the covers, so they must represent one you might consider? :0)

Did you know that Die Hard was considered a Christmas movie? I never thought about it before, until I read all of the "associations". More than just the party going on in the building.

Yes, my tattoo books are ones that I'd consider getting. I got tired of squinting at all the covers on my tbr pile to see if there was a tattoo on it, so I went with covers that I thought would make a good tattoo for me. Notice the recurring theme? Lol

I never really thought about Die Hard being a Christmas movie I watch it pretty much whenever its on, year round, but there is a lot of Christmas references. Funny thing I did just recently see a commercial where they mention it being a Christmas movie.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes, I got the cat (or paw print) theme.

I just can't bring myself to consider one so I looked for the word. I found one about a tattoo artist that is available from my library. The other is a place holder.

I always thought "May 4th" would be great, but I would hate having to explain that it was not a birthday.

Well, I was going for a book theme, but had to throw the cats in too.
I'm not sure I get your May 4th, unless its the May the 4th be with you reference?

message 33: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Actually, I was intrigued by the book tattoo idea and thought about it. Like an open book or book spine, but what to say?

Yes - "May the 4th be with you". (IF it were on me, it always would be, right?)

Lori Z | 2089 comments Part 1
Book: 1/12
Task: #45. Do you prefer green or black olives? Neither? Read a book with either a predominantly green or black cover depending on your answer. If you said “neither”, read a book with a predominantly white cover.
My Answer: Neither
Book Read: In the Woods In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad, #1) by Tana French
Reason: Has a predominately white cover.
I enjoyed this book and while at times I found it a little wordy for my taste it had a really good story and I gave it 4 stars and plan to continue with the series.

Lori Z | 2089 comments Part 1
Book: 2/12
Task #1 What is your name? (First, Last, Middle, Nickname) – Read a book that contains one of your names in some way – author, title, character.
My Answer: Lori
Book Read: Christmas at Twilight Christmas at Twilight (Twilight, Texas, #5) by Lori Wilde by Lori Wilde
Reason: Written by an author with my first name.
I loved revisiting the town of Twilight Texas in this ongoing series and I'm one book closer to killing off this series.

Lori Z | 2089 comments Part 1
Book: 3/12
Task #3 What colour are your eyes? – Read a book where the colour of your eyes is the main colour of the cover, or the word is in the title.
My Answer: Blue
Book Read: A Spool of Blue Thread A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler
Reason: The word blue is in the title.
I'm still not exactly sure how I feel about this book. Overall, it was a good read and I gave it 3 stars but it may be closer to 3 1/2 stars. I did enjoy getting to know 3 generations of the Whitshank family and I fell in love with one of the main characters, the house.

Lori Z | 2089 comments Part 1
Book: 4/12
Task #4 Have you ever had a broken bone? – If yes, read a book with the word “Bone” in the title. If no, read a book about archeology (the character may be an archeologist, the book may be set in a museum, etc)
My Answer: Yes
Book Read: The Bone Collector The Bone Collector (Lincoln Rhyme, #1) by Jeffery Deaver
Reason: The word bone is in the title.
Excellent thriller! Will continue with the series.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Good that there are lots of "bone" books out there for all of us that haven broken one or more. I'm adding this series to my TBR for future discovery. I was surprised that it wasn't.

I really enjoyed the movie with Denzel Washington. I've been wanting to read the book for ages.

I've never saw the movie, I'm going to have to check it out. I also just found that The Coffin Dancer, the 2nd book in the series, has a car on the cover, so I'm checking to see if my library has the right cover so I can use it for the challenge. If not, I'll probably read it anyway, but to count towards the challenge would be icing on the cake.

My Answer: car
Book Read: The Coffin Dancer The Coffin Dancer (Lincoln Rhyme, #2) by Jeffery Deaver
Reason: There's a picture of a car on the cover. (have to look close but its there)
Another excellent thriller.

Book: 7/12
Task #2 What is your favourite sport? – Read a book that is either about your favourite sport or one of the characters plays that sport. You could also chose a book where the cover shows that sport.
My answer: Baseball
Book Read: Bottom of the 33rd: Hope, Redemption, and Baseball's Longest Game Bottom of the 33rd Hope, Redemption, and Baseball's Longest Game by Dan Barry
Reason: It's about baseball.
I think I like watching baseball more than reading about it.

My Answer: Die Hard
Book Read: Nothing Lasts Forever Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp
Reason: The movie Die Hard was based on this book.
I actually liked the movie better than the book. That almost never happens to me.

message 49: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Wow, I didn't know there was a book!
I think I have to pass on the book then 'cuz I love the movie too much to tarnish it.

message 50: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2089 comments I never thought about Die Hard being based on a book till I listed it as my favorite movie and then had to find a book for this challenge. I'm not sorry I read it cause it was interesting to compare the two, but I don't blame you for not wanting to tarnish the movie.
