Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Of course, I'm still listening to Skin Game (The Dresden Files, #15) by Jim Butcher and that is looking great, as usual. Plus, I have a couple more I have open. So... I may be back before the end of the month.

message 10: by Oleander (last edited May 29, 2014 11:59AM) (new)

Oleander | 188 comments I've been wondering about Midnight Crossroad. Glad you liked it Lisa Kay.

After a long reading drought, I had a very good month. I had no 5 star books at all before May. Now I have several. Seems I needed to dip more into the thriller section. In order I read them:
What the Lady Wants by Jennifer Crusie Grave Secret (Harper Connelly, #4) by Charlaine Harris Bad Blood A Vampire Thriller by J.R. Rain Pray for Silence (Kate Burkholder, #2) by Linda Castillo

Also had some nice 4 stars:
Her Mad Hatter (Kingdom, #1) by Marie Hall Texas Fever (Harlequin Blaze #191) by Kimberly Raye Bloody Bones (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #5) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Of Butterflies & Books Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
I got through this book so quick. I read it for both Bookworm Bitches group and *Best Sellers* Book Club. I had been wanting to read this since it came out and I was so happy that two of my groups were doing it for their reads.

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) My 5 star reads this month:

I do finish almost everything, there have been very few I've left mid-book. I feel really guilty about not finishing, but it was slow moving and the subject matter was not to my liking.

message 26: by ⚜️XAR (new)

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) I think I had a rough month this past month. I took it "off" to focus on some of my longer running challenges, but overall though, it just seems like I disliked more than I enjoyed of what I read. Let's see how it breaks down:

Five Star
The Darkest Hour (KGI, #1) by Maya Banks Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling Once a Princess (Cardinia's Royal Family, #1) by Johanna Lindsey Breaking Point (I-Team, #5) by Pamela Clare Skin Deep (I-Team, #5.5) by Pamela Clare Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie The Search by Nora Roberts

Four Star
The Prince (The Selection, #0.5) by Kiera Cass Savor the Moment (Bride Quartet, #3) by Nora Roberts First Strike (I-Team, #5.9) by Pamela Clare Love Finds You in Martha's Vineyard, MA by Melody Carlson Ruby Tuesday (Wild Irish, #2) by Mari Carr A>Loverboy by Judith Arnold Inked by an Angel (The Cupid Chronicles, #1) by Shauna Allen The Heir (Reid Family, #1) by Johanna Lindsey Once Upon a Winter's Heart by Melody Carlson Drawn to Jonah by Jennifer DeCuir

Three Star
The Groom Wanted Seconds by Shirley Jump Because of You (Coming Home, #1) by Jessica Scott Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton Love Finds You in Treasure Island, Florida by Debby Mayne Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews The Next Always (Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy #1) by Nora Roberts Maid for Love (The McCarthys of Gansett Island, #1) by Marie Force

Two Star
Crossed (Matched, #2) by Ally Condie Love Finds You in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California by Sandra D. Bricker The Valkyrie's Guardian by Moriah Densley You Are Here by Liz Fichera Anything for You (Coming Home, #1.5) by Jessica Scott A May Bride (A Year of Weddings, #6) by Meg Moseley Hot Ride by Kelly Jamieson Lady Danger (The Warrior Maids of Rivenloch, #1) by Glynnis Campbell Sixty Acres and a Bride (Ladies of Caldwell County, #1) by Regina Jennings The Goblin King (Shadowlands, #1) by Shona Husk Bare Knuckle (Vegas Top Guns #5) by Katie Porter The Choice (Lancaster County Secrets, #1) by Suzanne Woods Fisher

One Star
Bound By The Heart by Marsha Canham Defying a Pirate by Camille Oster SEALed with a Promise (SEALed, #2) by Mary-Margret Daughtridge

Three stars are a mediocre read for me and while I like them, I much prefer my 4 or 5 star reads! But 12 two star reads...*sigh* rough month for sure!

*laughs* Eh, some were novellas that I read in less than a day and started (and finished!) a second book on the same day, so looking at it that way, it's not as impressive. But when 15 out of the 40 are a one or two star read...yeah, I consider that kinda rough!

message 30: by ⚜️XAR (new)

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) Gigi wrote: "Trea, you're my hero!!! I'm trying to finish 2. Lol"

*laughs* Gigi, it helps that I'm a stay at home mom with a son in preschool 4 mornings a week! 3 hours of reading time in the morning, 2-3 hours of reading time a night makes it easier to finish a book in a day. Sure, I spend a little time checking GR, my e-mail, Facebook, or gaming on Rift or World of Warcraft, but that takes maybe an hour of time at most. Plus, on the nights I can't sleep, I wind up reading anyway!

message 31: by Ren Puspita (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) I read 12 books this month and most of all are PNR.
My 4,5-5 stars:

Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) by Nalini Singh : I don't know why I'm so stubborn to decline read this. Love Kaleb and Sahara!

Angel in Chains (The Fallen, #3) by Cynthia Eden : OMG, guys! If you love PNR mix with suspense, you must read this! Cynthia Eden's books are very, very underrated

The Mark of the Tala (Twelve Kingdoms, #1) by Jeffe Kennedy : Pretty cover and great story as well!

4 stars but recommended to read:

Ein by Sorcha Black - this is erotica, despite a "not-erotic" cover. But the issue of this book related with problem in real world. Prepare tissue when read this :)

The Queen's Wings The Emerging Queens by Jamie K Schmidt : If you fans of Charley Davidson, you will like this one

Also read Tangled (Tangled, #1) by Emma Chase . More like 3,5 stars for me. I did't found this one as funny, but another think otherwise, so maybe it's just me *shrug*

And that's my May read. So happy to find so many great books to read :)

message 32: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I had a pretty good month overall, with my lowest rating being 3-stars. Courting Morrow Little A Novel by Laura Frantz was definitely my favourite for the month, and a pleasant surprise as I had read one of Laura Frantz's books before and enjoyed it, but not loved it. Ordinary Secrets (Hidden Falls, #1) by Olivia Newport was probably my "worst" book of the month at 3-stars, but I honestly wouldn't have chosen it if it hadn't been free on Audible, so I'm not going to complain too much.

5 Stars:
Courting Morrow Little A Novel by Laura Frantz Moonlight Road (Virgin River, #11) by Robyn Carr Destination Unknown by Amy Clipston Opening the Door to Your God-Sized Dream 40 Days of Encouragement for Your Heart by Holley Gerth

4 Stars:
A Perfect Square (Shipshewana Amish Mystery #2) by Vannetta Chapman A December Bride (A Year of Weddings, #1) by Denise Hunter The Kissing Bridge (Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors #3) by Tricia Goyer Night Road by Kristin Hannah Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson Inescapable (Road to Kingdom #1) by Nancy Mehl Love Comes Calling by Siri Mitchell While Love Stirs (The Gregory Sisters, #2) by Lorna Seilstad The Measure of Katie Calloway (Michigan Northwoods, #1) by Serena B. Miller

3 Stars:
Ordinary Secrets (Hidden Falls, #1) by Olivia Newport

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) Rachel, how was The Kissing Bridge (Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors #3) by Tricia Goyer ? I know you rated it 4 stars, but I'm a bit behind on the series and really want to get to that one at some point. I loved the premise...one of my favorite movies is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!

message 35: by Rachel (last edited Jun 03, 2014 07:24AM) (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) ShoSho, I thoroughly enjoyed that instalment in the series! I hadn't been such a big fan of Angel's Peak, the previous book, but this one reminded me of why I enjoy Virgin River so much :)

Trea, I definitely didn't enjoy The Kissing Bridge as much as Tricia's other Amish novels. It was a really tough one to rate. I think my main gripe was that most of the book took place over the space of a week, and it felt like the romance developed a bit too quickly. The conflict mainly revolved around the characters keeping secrets from each other, which isn't a favourite of mine. It was a really sweet story, I won't deny that, and I liked the chance to revisit characters from previous books (including ones from the Big Sky series). I swung between not liking the lack of a conventional plot structure, and enjoying seeing the characters learn to trust each other. Not a favourite, but sweet enough.

As for the series, I loved the previous two books. I felt like they dealt with deeper issues than this one, without detracting from the romance.

Thanks for the details! I actually haven't read the Big Sky series, but I think I'm going to have to move it up in the TBR now, just so I can follow what happens in this series. I don't remember being lost in the first book of this series, but I'm a bit OCD and want all my backstory first.

message 37: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) The references aren't the kind that would make you feel too confused, but I'd still recommend reading the Big Sky series as it's one of my favourites! It's a lot deeper than typical Amish fiction, and has a lot less of the "The Amish lifestyle is perfect and lovely and everyone should be Amish!" feel that some books in the genre have.
