We get more insight into the possible motivation of Kunze in how he treats Maggie and Tully. Was it plausible?

It was always clear that he resented their closeness to Cunningham and probably wanted them to quit so that he could replace them with loyal cronies. What I find strange is that he seems to be mellowing towards them and I'm suspicious that he might be up to something...

I'm curious as to how he gets away with it, especially since everyone and their mothers sees his behavior for what it really is. If he's softening towards them it's because those above him are slinging praises their way.
