Sophie Noel Hm... huh... I don't know how i feel. On one hand, I found this to be very unique with a crazy ending! (Though I'm not even %100 I liked the ending....) but on the other, I thought the first 3 quarters to be kind of boring. A lot of people love the writing but personally I didn't.
That ending...
I've never had such mixed emotions about a book... I CAN'T TELL IF I LIKED IT OR NOT!

Just five words.
OH
MY
GOD
THAT
ENDING

IT HAD SO MANY CLUES THROUGHOUT THE BOOK AND YOU'RE JUST TRYING TO PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER, BUT THEY JUST WON'T FREAKING STICK AND JUST GAH THIS BOOK I HATE IT BUT I LOVE IT IN THE SAME TIME
MIXED FEELINGS FTW WOOH

message 53: by Siân (new)

Siân Devine (sianlauramae) I sort of saw the ending coming when I noticed that nobody except Cady mentioned the liars, not one of them respond to her emails and they were all acting extremely strange.

But that didn't detract away from how much I enjoyed this book! Lockhart's writing style is wonderful and it made for a very enjoyable, intriguing read. Kind of sad it's finished!

message 54: by Siân (new)

Siân Devine (sianlauramae) "Granddad points to the peonies, now all in my hand. 'Three flowers for you. You should have three.' "

There were SO MANY clues!!!

Gabby (gabriellaglad) | 9 comments @sophie, I feel exactly the same way.

message 56: by Betty (new)

Betty F (bettyborrowsboks) I finished this a couple days ago and my feels are still all over the place. I had just thought she was lying about little small things but this was like her own body was lying to her about an entire event that caused so much damage. Such a great buildup.

message 57: by Chloe (new)

Chloe I was of course surprised by the ending. The problem I had with the book the entire time was how none of the liars really felt like they had developed and still felt like they were 14ish instead of 18. Of course that begins to make sense with the ending of the book, but I couldn't picture Cadence much older than 14 either which bothered me. I needed to see some more personal growth with the characters in this book that I felt wasn't there.

message 58: by Kay (new)

Kay (_kaybooks) | 6 comments I read the book in one sitting with a migraine, because I couldn't put it down. The ending had me bawling my eyes out for about 10-15 minutes straight, I had no idea it would end that way. When I was done I just had to sit there and think about the story. It even followed me into my dreams!! This is definitely going into my "top 20" lol. I will be recommending this to everyone!

message 59: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (stacy_michelle) | 3 comments I just finished reading this book. I gave this book 3.5/4 stars.

I was shocked with the ending but after I read it, I remember all the clues that were written throughout the book but I never pieced together.

I did enjoy the writing and all the stories that were included in the book and the king/merchant/etc and his three daughters.

Overall, it was an okay read

message 60: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Holden (namelessteen) | 2 comments Read this in one sitting and I was really shocked by the ending and once I reread that page again I was basically crying from there till the end. I have two questions though, how did she get an envelope full if rises and who red Taft that story just before summer 17?

message 61: by Ebonie (new)

Ebonie (bookmd) | 4 comments Cheese and Rice! That ending! I was so not expecting that. I cried my eyes out. Thanks E. Lockhart. I'd like to keep some tears for the TFIOS premiere in 2 days. But anyway, I was wondering as I was getting more into the story why there were only 3 people in the ocean on the cover when it was 4 of them. Clues were smacking you in the face from the beginning and it kept you guessing until the very end. I've never read a book like this before and I loved it. I loved the writing style. Overall, 4.5 stars for me! Can't wait for the live show with my favorite booktubers. Woot! :)

message 62: by Jessisanauthor (new)

Jessisanauthor | 4 comments Holy. Freaking. Cow.

That was one of the best books I have read. I will definitely reread this bad boy.

When Cady realizes she killed the dogs in the fire, I was thinking that it would be so much more dramatic if a human had died. But they knew about it. Not like it was with the other three Liars.

I was pretty much in tears from shock when I figured out that Gat died. WHY?????

But it was a very good book. I can't wait to see the live show and do this again!

message 63: by Chris (new)

Chris Willhite (thedillman) Through the whole book I was thinking of a murder mystery style ending. The first part of the book reminded me a lot of The a Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, so I was expecting maybe one of the family members attempting to kill her. Then about halfway through, that resemblance started to fade, and I didn't know what to expect. I really liked the ending.

message 64: by Anna (new)

Anna (annajepson) The ending made me incredibly sad. It escalated very quickly and made me angry and shocked that it happened. I thought that it wouldn't end well but she killed her best friends! It was utterly tragic for her and the rest of the family.
I loved this book. I love the whole concept of the Sinclairs and the house and even though I didn't particularly like Cadence, i liked that her and her faily were oblivious to how normal people live and how Gat opened her eyes to so much.
I just finished the books before it was the booksplosion book and this is the first discussion i have participated in.
I love this book <3

Lili Ashcraft | 3 comments I have to admit I kind of questioned some things... Also why were they called the Liars if they rarely ever lie?

But I blew off these things so the ending blew my head apart into a million little pieces... I wanted to cry, but i was sooo freaking made at Gat!

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

This was amazing. The end shocked me so much, even though if I reflect on it, I can see all of the clues that pointed to the conclusion. I think that we were all analyzing the clues as if we were analyzing a "typical" YA novel. Many endings are pretty predictable and usually end up being similar throughout, however this book was just so different from ANY book I have ever read. The horrifying truth and all of the plot twists and discoveries have left me emotionally drained. I LOVED all of the characters, and to discover that they were just ghosts, dead human beings... it crushed me. All of the feels. Just terrific. I agree that you should go into this book without knowing anything, otherwise people would be searching for specific clues.

message 68: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1 comments I couldn't put this book down because i wanted to know what happened. I had a feeling that something like the ending would happen as i read it but I didn't let myself believe it and when I did get to the end i was shocked.

message 69: by Hanna (new)

Hanna (peanutbutterwarcry) | 1 comments I didn't like this book. The writing style seemed forced and didn't go down well with me. It was like someone tried to sneek in poetic writing into an otherwise normal book.
The ending was not as mindblowing for me as it seems to have been for everyone else. I didn't see it coming until about one page beforhand, but it didn't freak me out or surprise me all that much. But then again, this might be because all of the hype that surrounded this book, I was expecting great things and they didn't happen.
The only part I enjoyed were the feelings that were conveyed when she found out what happened. That was truly upsetting.
Otherwise a book that I would not recommend and won't be picking up again.

message 71: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 3 comments I can't believe what I just read.... I can't believe that they are dead. This is not how I thought the book would end. I don't even have words for it. I don't know what to say. What a powerful ending. Wow, just wow.

message 72: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (noodlez88) | 13 comments o.O That is all!

message 73: by Edmund (new)

Edmund | 3 comments That was sooo unexpected! I couldn't even guess that's what the ending was going to be, but I can now kind of see that we had clues the whole way through. Like The fact that Mirren never wanted to leave Cuddledown and so when Cadence did they didn't follow, because they only existed at Cuddledown to her, and even the title 'Were WERE Liars' suggests that it's in the past - but I never even thought that it was suggesting that they are now dead! Anyway, that was one hell of twist and, though it was depressing, it was an ending that made sense of all the mystery and left me shocked but satisfied as the long-awaited truth had finally been revealed.

message 74: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Chapman | 2 comments I can't believe how much I cried during Part 5. Am I right in thinking that, during the rest of the book when she was interacting with Gat, Johnny and Mirren, she was hallucinating them? Or we're they actually there. It was a little bit confusing as to whether everyone else could see them except her.

Apart from that, I really really enjoyed this book. I love books that make me cry and make me connect to the characters.

message 75: by Jen (new)

Jen I had the theory that the liars were all dead from early I
on. I'm not sure what have me that idea, probably the fact that every time one of the liars left Cady after taking to her, they suddenly seemed to disappear. Since I knew something insane likely happened, it seemed possible with that and how everyone was acting. Plus the liars didn't really interact with anyone else from the family.

The mystery and suspense of the book was awesome and I love the fairytale chapters thrown in there. But for some reason I thought the big accident want as crazy as I thought it was going you be. I didn't like how the ending dragged on after we learn about the fire and she says good bye to the liars. And I thought there was a lack of resolution between her and the rest of the characters at the end. But overall, I thought this was a entertaining book and I loved the suspense.

Lauren (bookworm1987) | 11 comments I was definitely surprised by the ending. I had to re-read he part were you find out that her friends where dead. It all made sense after I finished it. I still didn't love or like it all that much though. Originally I was intending to give it one star since the whole book moved so slow; but in the end I ended up giving it two.

I think they were called Liars because they told a different story about what happened with the fire (this is just my thought on that little area)

I agree. The ending wasn't too sad for me because I couldn't connect nor relate to the characters at all, so I wasn't in tears at their deaths.

I could never understand either why they were called the Liars. Absolutely zero lying happened before the fire. So why did they have that nickname?

Saru (Queen of Bookland) (sarulovesbooks) I was in complete and utter shock at the end of this book. But in a good way. It broke my heart, but the ending is honestly what compelled me to give this book more than 3 stars. It was a wonderfully tragic conclusion. That sounds really insensitive. XD

message 85: by Bre (new)

Bre | 6 comments It was a very surprising ending. I didn't get attached to any if the characters so I'm surprised at my sadness to their deaths. But this was a great book. Everything came together nicely in the end. (Well, the answers came nicely. The events weren't very happy though.)

message 86: by Kushti (new)

Kushti | 5 comments I don't know why everyone hates the characters! I loved them all! I thought they all had unique personalities and they were all so interesting. I loved this book and the relationship between the characters. I admire how much thought and planning went into this novel. I give it a 5 out of 5!

message 87: by Jana (new)

Jana (penguininabluebox) I really meant to write something about all the parts while reading the book. The thing is, I just really, really couldn't put it down. It was SO SO SO GOOD, so addicting and I really LOVED the writing so much. I also agree with Kush, I loved all of the characters as well - Johnny, Mirren, Gat and Cadence, that is. I didn't particularly like the adults though. But wow, I totally didn't see that ending coming and I'm so happy to have gone into this book pretty blindly.

message 88: by sally ✿ (new)

sally ✿ (sallyzhang) I did have a problem with the writing style it was very confusing for me and it took me a while to process what was happening. But that might just be me! Anyways, wow. The ending. I was completely shocked! There were so many subtle hints of what had happened, like how no one ever mentioned them, how they never went to supper with the family. And a lot more, but still, I was completely surprised about the ending.

I really enjoyed the fairytale variations they were very creative and unique. Overall I'd probably give it a 4 out of five stars (maybe 3.5) because although it surprised me and and I enjoyed the fairytales the writing style did bother me.

Kat (Lost in Neverland) (bnlnjf) | 1 comments To be honest, I really did not like the book the entire time I was reading it. I didn't like the characters, the story, the boring plot, etc.

But I have to admit, I didn't see that ending coming. I would have rated it 2 stars if not for the revelation in the end.

message 90: by Katie (new)

Katie (mangokatt) | 2 comments That ending was really shocking. I was not predicting that. Now reading other people's reviews, I realize the foreshadowing and how Cady never mentioned the Liars to her family. It's creepy how she sees them as ghosts and what happens. But, I loved it. It was nice and refreshing to read a suspenseful read.

message 92: by Samantha A (new)

Samantha A I had the opportunity of reading this book all in one sitting the other night, and wow. WOW. I did think that Gat died in the beginning. I thought they went swimming together and he died and she lived, but when she went back to the island and he was there, I just thought I was wrong. I really didn't see that coming.

Oh and I was so preparing to rage about this on goodreads when I thought the ~big~ plot twist was that they set the fire. I was like... that's it? I mean that was terrible but I didn't think it deserved so much hype, and then E. Lockhart just dropped that whole oh yeah and everyone died bomb on me and I exploded.

message 93: by Samantha A (new)

Samantha A MY REVIEW:

“We are liars. We are beautiful and privileged. We are cracked and broken.”

Wow. I can't tell you anything about the plot of this book, all I can tell you is that you should read it. I had the opportunity to read this book in one sitting, and I feel like that is the best way to do it.. I met these characters, I fell in love with these characters, I got frustrated with these characters. I laughed, cried, and felt angry with these characters, and I got my heart ripped out by these characters.

E. Lockhart unravels a story that you are forced to get lost in, and when she is through with you, you are thankful to have been a part of it.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

This ending reminded me of a movie called The Uninvited in several ways, including that I didn't see the end coming, and rather than making me hate Cady, made me feel sorry for her. Just in case you're reading this before finishing the book, I'm not going to explain why as my explanation spoils the ending. RE: the Uninvited, if you liked/loved this book, watch the film. The main story line is different (of course), but the similarities are compelling :D

message 95: by SP (new)

SP (readingwriting4eva) | 1 comments I thought it was an okay book. I liked the ending but the writing was pretty mediocre. I absolutely could not stand the prose. The characters were also bleak and uninteresting to me. Like meh.

The ending was rushed and cheesy.

Andrew (BritBookBoy) (britbookboy) This was a really sinister, entertaining read for me. I burnt through the pages really quickly, desperate to find out what the truth would be. I had a slight inkling as to what the big reveal would be, mainly as the book neared the climax and the hints became more obvious. The extent of the situation was what shocked me the most, and the realisation of how heavy that would make the grief.

It had a great, unique writing style. Not quite a five star for me, but I think four stars is still a great rating. Would definitely recommend this.

message 97: by Lex (new)

Lex (literaryspine) THE ENDING! I didn't think they were all dead! I cried throughout the whole ending... I felt all of Cadences pain and grief when she remembered what happened during summer fifteen! My heart broke... Her cousins and her love, all gone in the matter of minutes. Definitely a new favourite!

message 98: by whoufflestories (new)

whoufflestories (bookpond) | 9 comments THIS IS SO SAD OH MY GOD. I'm crying. I was not expecting that ending, not at all. And looking back there was so so so many hints as to what happened. And the contents. It does remind me of The Uninvited.

I love the characters too. At first I hated them all and then I just hated the adults. I love all the young ones, though.

I really really enjoyed this. 5 stars.
