Holy crap! I didn't se any of it coming. ALL THE FEELS WERE FELT.

Why did she freak out about the dogs so much? She complained that they were naughty and then basically felt like a murderer over the DOGS. Get over it. You murder them, but not Gat and Mirren and Johnny. They basically committed accidental suicide. I'm still trying to figure out why she had no clothes on the beach! Just so confused.

Honestly, thinking back through the book everything was there, but as a reader I dismissed a lot of the clues assuming they were just characterization or adding depth to the stories. How wrong I was - everything was there for a reason!
Probably not a re-read for me, and it definitely isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it!!

I really liked the beginning, but I did get bored in the middle when Cady was trying to regain her memories, at when she first returned to the island. I just couldn't see where the story was going, but by the time she started to remember bits by bits I was hooked. I also loved all the fairy tales that reflected their perfect Sinclair life.
The ending was shocking and I think the author's writing style just made it that much more impactful and impressive. In the end, I liked that this story also touched on the family greed that caused the Liars to do what they did, their feeling of teenage invisibility, their drunkenness when they did and everything fell apart, and how the family became tighter due to tragedy. A lot of things happened in this book and I may go back to reread it now that I know the ending to see all the clues.

The ending really surprised me. I did not see that coming. I understood the cover better after finishing this book. The feels. The feels :(. Just finished reading it. Just WHOA. There isn't even a scrabble word for how I feel...

I agree with this. I think that they are called liars because their existance is a lie. Cady is lying to herself as a coping mechanism and all the things they discuss when she comes back to the island are lies.

What do you think?

I think the writing is what I loved the most, the emotions, metaphors, symbolism, literary devices. This would be a great novel to teach in schools. Also, I see most people say they aren't sure why they are called liars but I think that their whole life is a lie.

I think the writing is what I loved the most, the emotions

Holy cow. The ending. I literally didn't see it coming at all? I thought her "accident" happened because of something totally different! When she first describes it towards the beginning of the book she mentions being able to see the base of the island (or at least I think she says that) and when she jumps off that cliff she mentions again that she sees the base of the island, and since Mirren was sobbing for her to get down, I thought maybe she felt guilty because they did that at night and that's how she hurt herself?
Now that I have read the ending I see the clues the author left for us; the aunt wandering around at night (mourning the loss for her boy), penny always wanting cady to hang out with the littles, the liars never being around the adults, unanswered emails.
I'm not sure if the liars were hallucinations or ghosts? That is what really messes with my mind.
Unlike the others, I actually didn't mind Cady. She wasn't all there and she was a bit selfish but honestly I would be the same. When I'm in pain and I'm alone I feel sorry for myself. I thought it was refreshing to see a main character who was a bit messed up for reasons other than anxiety and stuff, and so interesting to see how her being sad and different clashes between the perfection that was the Sinclairs. I also really felt for the other liars even before I found out they were dead. Maybe not because I connected with them but Because I got to know their aspirations in life whether it was just build a Lego taxidermy fish, find love, or read the top 100 best novels... They had a future.
Reading about this prestige family really interested me because it's so different from the family's here on Kauai and how money really controls people and to me it was so interesting to see that dark side of that.
I've loved E. Lockhart since I stumbled upon The Boyfriend List in my local library, but this took my love to a whole new level. The way she wrote... Although sometimes it was fragments, sometimes that is all our mind can manage to croak out.
This novel... Wow. I can't form into words how hauntingly beautiful this is.
The only thing that slightly bothered me was how dramatic she was? When she mentioned in the beginning that her dad shot her and her heart rolled out I thought she was serious for a few moments (because she mentioned "the accident") so I had to read that a few times and all the references to her bleeding??
Also... Why were the liars called "the liars"? I know they lied some but i can't remember anything they did that was bad enough to actually be dubbed "the liar" minus the fire but she called them that way before the fire happened.
Still so uncertain about whether the liars were ghosts or hallucinations!!! AHHHH I REALLY NEED TO SLEEP hahahah
