Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments This is the discussion thread for our January BOM: Moonshadow by Thea Harrison.

Some details you may wish to include in your discussion:
* How did the Elder Races spin-off compare to the original series?
* How would rate the character development, originality, and action?
* What did you think of the world building?
* Did you have a favorite quote or scene?
* Would you recommend the book to others?
* Do you plan on reading the rest of the series?

Sandra | 25908 comments Oh, good I've bought that one :D

Marisa (moretta) | 1333 comments I haven't purchased it yet but it will be available on Jan for me... if I haven't already read it ☺

Sam | 1052 comments I bought it too, but haven't gotten to it yet. Looking forward to reading it as I enjoy Harrison's Elder Races world. Though I will be sad if we don't see more of Pia, Dragos and the kiddies. And she still has to go back and write the book with the witch cousin visiting, right?

So it would be best to read elder races first?

Sam | 1052 comments Per the author's website...

the Moonshadow trilogy will focus on the UK demesnes and will not require knowledge of the previous Elder Races books.

My thoughts:
However, I think it would be helpful to know something of the world before reading this series (though I could be wrong). I am uncertain how much background/world building Moonshadow will give.

Sandra | 25908 comments Yes a bit hard to know until you've read it, or at least got it in your hot little hands.

Mine is in the mail from Bk Depository, I think.

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments I'm looking forward to this one.

I was thinking the same, Sam. Might be helpful, but as Sandra said, sometimes ya never know until you've read it.

Sandra | 25908 comments Just checked and I ordered the kindle edition not the pb, so it will appear on 13 December. LOL

Kim Shumaker (kim_shumaker) | 707 comments I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from the author and I'm about halfway through it. I have not read the Elder Races series but am having no trouble keeping up with the story. The story is set in the UK and there hasn't been any mention of happenings in the US thus far so I don't think reading the original series is necessary. So far I have enjoyed the story immensely and highly recommend it.

Sandra | 25908 comments Excellent news Kim for those who haven't read the Elder series.

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Thanks for the update, Kim! And, Yay! for your ARC! :)

message 14: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim Shumaker (kim_shumaker) | 707 comments I was very excited about getting the ARC. I am very new to the world of writing reviews. I just finished it and I loved it. There were a few mentions of the "Elders Race" as a whole - nothing detailed. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

message 15: by Steph, Serious series addict (new) - rated it 3 stars

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments I hear ya! It's always such a thrill whenever I get an ARC. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm sure I will too; I typically do.

Thanks Kim. I hate feeling like I am missing something! That is good to know.

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) I too was given an arc by the author and I really enjoyed this book! With that said the first book in the Elder Series is one of my all time favorite books so I can't say this one is as good as that one. I think I will enjoy this series as a whole just as much though. The characters were well developed and likable and the world building is interesting (same world as Elder Series only it takes place in Europe vs. USA). I will definitely continue to read this series!

Art (aka Whistler Reads) (art-whistlerreads) | 874 comments I think I remember the Elders, I'll check now that it's New Year's Day...
I'm just finishing up my third re-read/update of Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock series. The Goodreads page for the series begins with a "reading order" that includes shorts in several different anthologies. They all (at least up to volume 10) have more recently been gathered up in order into Blood in Her Veins: Nineteen Stories from the World of Jane Yellowrock.
I'll move on to Elder races with you folks next.

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Jane Yellowrock is one of my favorites, Art.

I'm definitely starting this one shortly - this month, hopefully.

lorii (Loriidae) | 522 comments Finished and while I did enjoy it for the most part l was disappointed in the strong language (swearing and crudity from the heroine).

For those who have read the Elder series: Is this typical of Harrison heroines?

message 21: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sandra | 25908 comments No, can't remember a heroine swearing & being crude before. It may have happened, but I don't remember it.

I don't recall that either. She has kickass heroines, smart heroines, or both but none have ever come across as crass.
