In keeping with our Around the World theme, let's travel through books! Set a goal for the number of miles or kilometers you plan to travel. With every book you read, choose the setting (or settings) and calculate how many miles there are between that point and the previous point using this calculator.
Rules:
- Only books based on this world count--sorry, no traveling to different galaxies. :)
- Use each setting in each book once; even if the characters travel back and forth, you can only count the setting for that book one time
- You may revisit the same setting in different books (for example, you may read two books that both take place in New York City)
- Use your best judgment on which settings in each book should be included; you should only be using primary settings
Goal - 30,000 miles
Starting point - West Palm Beach, FL, USA
First book - A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout (completed):
- Alberta, Canada: 4197 miles
- Caracas, Venezuela: 6455 miles
- Bangladesh: 15500 miles
- Pakistan: 2208 miles
- Kabul, Afghanistan: 461 miles
- Addis Adabi, Ethiopia: 4207 miles
- Baghdad, Iraq: 2770 miles
- Mogadishu, Somalia: 3483 miles
- Nairobi, Kenya: 1018 miles
- Total thus far: 40,300 miles
40,300/30,000 miles

Many of us will have heard of the classic novel by Leo Tolstoy: War and Peace. But do you know the following facts?
1. War and Peace is perhaps best known as one of the longest novels ever written, and spans the period 1805 to 1820. Read a book that has more than 500 pages or one takes place over a span of 15 or more years. - Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by A. Scott Berg - completed
2. The book is set during the French invasion of Russia and chronicles the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society through the stories of five aristocratic Russian families. Read a book about aristocrats or one that is told from different perspectives. - The Sound of Glass by Karen White - completed
3. Tolstoy said War and Peace is "not a novel, even less is it a poem, and still less a historical chronicle". Large sections, especially the later chapters, are a philosophical discussion rather than narrative. Read a book that fits different genres or one that contains philosophical considerations. - It's Bigger Than Hip Hop: The Rise of the Post-Hip-Hop Generation by M.K. Asante Jr - completed
4. Tolstoy also said that the best Russian literature does not conform to standards and hence hesitated to call War and Peace a novel. Instead, he regarded Anna Karenina as his first true novel. Read a debut novel or one that has a link with Anna Katerina.
5. The central character, Count Pyotr Kirillovich (Pierre) Bezukhov, is the socially awkward illegitimate son of Count Kirill Vladimirovich Bezukhov, and is based on Tolstoy himself. Read a book about a socially awkward person or one that you can identify with. - The Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story by Diane Ackerman - completed
6. The narrative mentions 559 different characters, of which about 200 are historical figures. Tolstoy tried to get everyone into his novel: emperors, generals, nobility, peasants, soldiers, all with their own mannerisms and speech patterns. Read a book that is based on historical figures or one that includes multiple layers of society. - Flawed by Cecelia Ahern - completed
7. Portions of an earlier version, titled The Year 1805, were serialized in The Russian Messenger from 1865 to 1867. The novel was first published in its entirety in 1869. Read a book that has been published under different titles or one that is part of a series. - Madam President by Nicolle Wallace - completed
8. The Russian novel has been translated to English eleven times, the first translation by the American Nathan Haskell Dole in 1899. Read a book that was originally written in a language other than English or one that is set before 1899. - Glory over Everything: Beyond The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom - completed
9. There are three films and five television adaptations of the story. The four-part and 431-minutes long Russian film took six years to shoot and has won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. Read a book that contains a competition or one about bilingual characters. - The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See - completed
10. English progressive rock band Yes's song "The Gates of Delirium" from their 1974 album Relayer was inspired by War and Peace. Read a book about music or a delirious character. - Sisi: Empress on Her Own by Allison Pataki - completed
