NerdyJediGymnast | 191 comments Just tell a story. What made you really love books to the point where you might be crazy (which is fantastic!) And if can you tell what book brought you into it, that's great too!

matilly parracho (superparracho) | 22 comments I'm not a native English speaker, so as soon as I learned to read and speak it properly, I got it to reading, which was something I already loved, just in a diferente language

That's amazing! What book brought you into it if you can remeber?

NerdyJediGymnast | 191 comments I was never a reader. When I was little, I could never be still long enough to sit and read (plus, I didn't exactly know how). When I was 6 or 7, my Mom sat me down and read "African Folktales by Hugh Vernon Jackson to me. I loved the stories and that made me want to read even more. When I turned 8, I knew how to read some light chapter books, but not much. At 9, I had learned to read "big books", like Percy Jackson and Harry Potter (1-5. I couldn't read 6 or 7 because I was scared). When I was 10, I read Hunger Games (my first YA!) and I became obsessed with finding more books like that. By 11, I read the Secret Series and had more books than I could fit on my bookcase and now in my teen years, I'm a Book-a-holic

message 8: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fionareadsbooks) | 14 comments I've always been a huge reader (I taught myself to read when I was three I was so anxious to start reading) but the books that propelled me from my learner books into actual books was the Harry Potter series when I was eight while the Warriors series got me emotionally invested in characters for the first time when I was 11 and the Inheritance Cycle spawned my love of epic fantasy (when I was 11/12). When I had my great two year reading slump Rick Riordan made sure that I kept reading at least two books a year and finally as much as I disagree with the direction in which she took her books, Sarah J Maas started me on YA fantasy and fiction when I was 13/14-ish and I haven't stopped reading in the years since.

message 9: by Jessica (new)

Jessica LaMotte (jesz009) When I was in 7th grade, we had a 15 minute period at the beginning of English class where we had to read the newspaper. I found that insanely boring, so I made the excuse to go to the library every day since that was the only way to get out of reading the newspaper. I found a handful of books that I thoroughly enjoyed and that started my love for reading. In high school, I didn't read as much, but when I found Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon, I fell back into the habit of reading. That was the first series I started fangirling over.

Michelle (wanderingbeyondpages) | 5 comments My bestfriend was a big reader (in my eyes). She had read Harry Potter multiple times and was fangirling with another girl about those and I must admit that I was jealous of the attention. So than my bestfriend started to read Twilight and ended up loving it. So I thought if I read it, I can fangirl with her. And well Twilight was the start but my love grew when I was reading the vampire academy series. And now Outlander is bae

Moms make us who we are. At least my mom. She literally had to tackle me to sit and read. If she didn't, I never would've read books.

NerdyJediGymnast | 191 comments Fun Fact: I never knew Hunger Games was YA when I was 10. I thought is was a normal book. When I was 12, I learned what YA Lit was, because of an EpicReads Book Explains

Aha thanks guys! I'm honoured to be compared to Matilda. My mum's an English teacher so I can vouch for mums instilling reading addictions in their children at early ages.

Shannon (shananigansreads) | 184 comments Boredom in the summer between 7th and 8th grade. I was home alone all day, not that into soap operas so I picked up and R. L. Stine book and and haven't looked back. I discovered most of the time I'd rather use my imagination with a story than just watching people on TV or in a movie.

Shannon (shananigansreads) | 184 comments All this mom talk makes me giggle. My mom is not a reader at all. She'd rather go fall asleep on a movie. My dad reads but no where near as much as I do. I think I get my reading bug from my Aunt. I remember sneaking her harlequin books when I was waaaayyyy too young to read them.

Jaydyn |Between the Bindings| | 3 comments It wasn't exactly a book that got me sucked into the world of reading, but rather a person. My parents have always been avid readers, but my mom is a huge bookdragon, and our house always one book short of being a library. So, having been surrounded by that at such a young age always sparked that desire and need to read <3 Shout out to my parents for encouraging my love of reading(:

message 49: by Anita (new)

Anita (neet413) | 160 comments I have a sister who is 20 months older than myself, so when I was 4 and she was in first grade, she knew how to read and I was jealous! So my sister, who has the patience of a saint, sat me down and taught me how to read. A 6 year old teaching a 4 year old. And it worked! Once I hit first grade, my sister and I got library cards and made dad bring us there once a week to get our fix.

45 years later, and not much has changed, LOL. Always browsing on Amazon, and used books stores when I'm out and about.
