My Familiar Stranger by Victoria Danann had a woman who was pushed through a portal into a parallel world. I don't remember if she was blind, but she was described as looking like she went through a meat grinder because the portal was broken somehow?

Hmmm.... I doubt it's this, but check To Your Scattered Bodies Go and the other Riverworld books. But I think it's a stretch, sorry.
