Good clear explanation Christian.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) Though as some have mentioned we may not be classified as 'normal' readers we should do our best to step back and read objectively. In addition, when reading in a different genre to that normally chosen, I think many here do become 'normal' readers. Yes, of course, authors subconsciously if not consciously consider a book's structure etc. But then, do not 'normal' readers also do so? Seems a little insulting to suggest they are not capable.

Kat (katwiththehat) | 2277 comments My goal is to get thoughtful reviews that are 1) written primarily from a reader- rather than author-perspective, and 2) read as regular reviews on Amazon and GR.

I would agree non-authors certainly consider things like structure, plot, characters, etc, but perhaps we, when wearing our author hats so much of the time through beta reading, editing our own work, etc, need to be extra vigilant when writing reviews to make sure we're doing so as readers.

As for the good example up-thread of "I don't like alien stories," I feel like those sorts of comments hurt the review recipient by making the review seem disingenuous. It also seems to me that part of participation in review rounds should be attempting to review whatever books you are assigned in good faith to the best of your ability.

Agree authors should take care to approach and draft reviews as a reader. May not be instantly easy but with due attention quite possible. Makes the review far more valuable and authentic which, it is presumed, authors would like for their own books.

As a reader, I want to hear what you liked about a book. Or disliked. I want some details to help me decide if I'd like to read it. If someone complains that a book is 'too dark' or 'too intense', that might be exactly what I'm looking for and I'll read it, but if they just leave a low review and say, "I hated this" that doesn't help me at all.

I'm a new author, so as far as reviews of my books, I appreciate whatever time someone wants to take. I'd love to hear how it made you feel, what really stuck with you or whatever you want to say.

hi Khurram! There are no groups currently open. Check back in this folder and look for a round that says "now forming" in the thread title.

Ayad Zerarki | 1 comments Hello, dear readers! I’ve noticed something puzzling that I’d love your thoughts on. While my book has been enjoying good sales, the number of reviews remains surprisingly low. Feedback is incredibly valuable as a writer—it helps me grow and connect with my audience. I’m curious: is there something that might be holding readers back from leaving reviews? I’d greatly appreciate your insights, especially from the fantastic Goodreads

P. Pherson | 36 comments My ratio so far seems to be 1/10. One review per 10 reads. I'll also say, so far, everyone I have given a free copy of the book to, has not come back to review it.

Other Authors I speak to also have a similar experience, in fact, some say, I am ahead with that.

I dont know.

I would just implore ppl to leave reviews for the books they read. As a beginning author, it very hard to get off the ground without the validation of readers. Just kind of a fact, that stories with less than 25 reviews get overlooked by readers as not having enough reader validation to be trusted. And without them, many stories just wither on the vine.

So please, if you have read it, please review it.
