Please comments here on Chapters 1 - 4 of The Old Devils by Kingsley Amis.

Irene | 651 comments I have read the first three chapters. Some of the snarky narrative observations have made me chuckle. But, I am missing most of the snarky comments about Wales and Welsh culture and cultural wannabees.

Mary (maryingilbert) | 79 comments Good point, Irene. Am enjoying the novel, although having some difficulty matching the characters of husbands + wives. Reading the novel brings to mind the oft-repeated saying "getting older is not for sissies".

I am a third of the way through and enjoying the humour, the information on Wales in the 1980s and the characters, who are older people, around retirement age. It is not a plot driven read. It takes a few pages to get to know the characters, but once you work out who is who and how they are related, it's an engaging story.

Irene | 651 comments I agree. Even when I was not chuckling, I was eager to pick it back up. The characters grew on me. Leaving them was a little sad, like saying good-bye to a group of rather quirky, sometimes abrasive but likable despite that folks that I just spent a week's vacation with.
