NetGalley

Feed Your Readers, the NetGalley Challenge

Duration: Monthly

How to Participate:

The NetGalley Challenge is designed to not only get you to read your NetGalley books, but to also advertise your reviews for others to see because after all, that's what NetGalley is all about.

Though you may pop in/out at any time, the NetGalley Challenge will run on a monthly basis so you are able to see progress being made.

1. At the beginning of the month, post any/all of the following:
a: How many books on your NetGalley shelf
b: What books are on your NG shelf
c: What your Netgalley feedback ratio is

2. During the month, read the NetGalley books that you can AND update your post with your reviews. (You can do this after each book or wait until the end of the month.)

3. At the end of the month, update your post and with:
a: What books you read
b: Link(s) to your review(s)**
c: Your updated shelf count
d: Your updated books to read
e: Your updated ratio

Then start a new post for the next month!

But Wait, There's More

Do you ever get so caught up in your reading that you don't want to stop to write your reviews?

Thinking about that, it was decided we need a "Review Weekend", once each month, set aside to write those reviews you've been not doing in favor of reading!

Review Weekends will vary randomly each month and is meant to be a time set aside to review. Take one, or both days and get caught up on reviews so you can spend the rest of the month reading!!

The next Review Weekend is set for December

**When linking your reviews, please link only to the book(s) here at GoodReads. At this time, linking to a personal blog is not allowed. Thank you!

Madeline (maddyd51) I am at 25% on Poisoned Blade, one of the four books I'm aiming for this month, but I have been completing lots of books for the Read Harder and Modern Mrs. Darcy challenges, so I'm counting it as a win!

message 25: by Kazen (new)

Kazen It looks like Buzz Books is going monthly, oooo. Kind of wish they gave more lead time, though - a month before release is enough time to get excited about a book, but it makes it hard to request a copy and get a review out on time. Maybe that's better for our ratios, though! ;)

message 26: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments I am not doing well this month. 2 reviews up but 5 books added to shelf. Does anyone know if there's an option on Netgalley to prevent you requesting anymore books? I have no shelf control.

@Alison Well, you could ask someone to change your password so that you couldn't go on for as long of a time period that you wanted to. They could be your accountability partner in this aspect and you would probably stay more on track.

Kazen wrote: "It looks like Buzz Books is going monthly, oooo. Kind of wish they gave more lead time, though - a month before release is enough time to get excited about a book, but it makes it hard to request a..."

@Kazen, I have a question about these. Do you read all the excerpts and all the chapters or do you just click around and choose the ones that you like and skim or skip the rest? I'm asking because embarrassingly I have one from fall/winter and I don't know what to do with it.

Nicole wrote: "All right, we're ten days in to this challenge, how's everyone going? So far I've read and reviewed three books:

@Nicole I've read 6 books this month from NetGalley, I just don't feel a need to link them up on here! Actually happy with my progress though tbh :)

If the synopsis sounds like exactly my sort of thing I'll read the whole excerpt. If it sounds interesting but I'm not sold I'll see how far I get. And if the summary is full of Kazen poison ("gripping suspense! heartbreaking tragedy!" ...not my thing) I'll skip it.

My goal is to come away with a book or two that looks good, so I can write "I'm especially looking forward to xyz!" in my feedback. If something looks awesome I may hunt down a review copy. Buzz Books is a marketing tool for the publishers - the idea is to get as many books in front as many eyeballs as possible. We're not expected to like them all. :)

eta: I just downloaded the January edition, and it looks like the excepts were pulled from the 2016 Fall/Winter and the 2016 YA Fall/Winter editions. There is a new January 2017 publishing preview, but it's basically a list of titles. So this January edition could be either a boring repeat or a feedback ratio boost, see it as you will! Hehe.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for the warning, I was going to get the January one, but then I thought "nah" I still have to leaf through the fall and winter one first. And this time I'll do it very what catches my eye sort of thing.

message 33: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I'm not sure I'll get any reviews in this month. It's been holiday hectic around here. At least I don't have time to be on NetGalley adding books either, right?

message 34: by Madeline (new)

Madeline (maddyd51) I have been reading to check off boxes on my book challenges for the year. Six more books to go to meet all the categories, so not sure I'm going to make it! I'm doing the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge and the Modern Mrs Darcy Challenge.

message 35: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I've been trying to wrap up some challenges too, Madeline. I had 5 books to wrap up 2 year long challenges and I'm not going to make it. I think I'll only finish 1 book, which will complete the first part of one of those challenges. So disappointing, but real life must come first!

message 39: by Kazen (new)

Kazen I just DNFed a book, le sigh. I liked the jacket copy for Thrust by Sybil Bartel but it doesn't mention the soldier/PTSD element of the story, which is not my thing in romance. Ah well.

message 40: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I just DNFed one too, Kazen. I thought Hitler The Psychiatric Files by Paul Roland would be interesting, but it turned out to be an analysis of his personality based upon the popular theories of the time. Basically, Freudian psychoanalysis. I couldn't read any more about his love/hate relationship with his mother, etc. Plus, I felt like I was reading a college essay. There were so many quotes and references to others that had done the analyzing years ago. He just compiled the info and commented or extrapolated on it. Unfortunately, it wasn't for me.

I haven't completed any books yet this month and I'm going away for the holidays, so I probably won't. I'll try to make up for it next month.

message 41: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I read a whole bunch in the first half of the month. Not so much the last several days however. Unfortunately holidays as meant less time to read. :/

message 42: by Lara (new)

Lara | 676 comments Wow, I had big plans for this month, but so far have done very little. Well, there are some holiday days left so maybe I'll be able to get a few books read.

message 43: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I'm going out of state for the holidays, so I will be too busy visiting with family and friends to read much. I won't be back home until the eve of the 30th, so I know I won't get to any more until January. One DNF for me is it for this month. At least I know that January will definitely be better. lol

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a question: What does one do when they get a copy of the same book on Edelweiss and NetGalley? Or when you won an ARC from the publisher and got one on NG? To explain I take the number limit very seriously, but I was brand new on Edelweiss and requested this book a really long time ago, not expecting to get accepted because I've gotten only denials. On NG it was requested a couple if months ago but I also found it accepted and added onto myself. So it's accidentally forgetful. How does one put a disclaimer on this type of review?

This has been one of the best reading months for me. I've read a total of 14 books(3 were an audiobook and the rest were books from NetGalley). Usually, my holiday is the opposite of busy as my family doesn't do anything to celebrate so I'm left alone to hibernate and read all day.

One of the best tips about NG that I've heard recently that changed how many times a publisher denies me was: Put your real picture in the profile picture. Now that seems so obvious, but for 9 months I've had an Audrey Hepburn portrait up as that, and that's why I've gotten nearly 80 denials. :o After changing the picture, I've gotten accepted for over 20 copies!
