THE LOSSES for me was a journey into the deception and pain that families cause each other, whether intentional or not. One of the things I tried to do in the novel was to lay out the journeys individual family members take in pursuit of their goals--be it financial, personal, relationship-wise, career-wise, and so on. One of the things I find fascinating about the dynamics of relationships is that perception is relative, and that seemingly good things, noble pursuits embarked upon by one family member don't always translate into the same situation for other members of the same family. This was a key focus for me while I wrote the novel.
I think it's easy to sort of approach a novel with the conventional idea of a "hero" who has a "goal" and who then has obstacles thrown in front of them that they either overcome or don't. I think it's more interesting to add the additional layer of the effects one character's actions or inaction has on the circle of family and friends around them. If you have a chance to read THE LOSSES and have any comments regarding this aspect of the novel, let me know . . . I'd be happy to have that dialogue with you.
Thanks,
Cully
