Rosie | 9 comments Hello:

I'm a NG newbie and I need a bit of help. I just signed up last night and requested 5 books. I didn't think I would get approvals so soon but I've been approved for 3 of the 5 books requested so far.

The publication dates are: two for Jan 31 and one for Feb 13.

I've downloaded two of the books so far. I plan on reading the Feb 13 book tomorrow -- because of length and personal interest in the story.

My questions are ...

When should I submit feedback to the publisher? After finishing the book or closer to the publication date?

Thanks in advance for any/all replies.

Dorie - Cats&Books :) (dorie--catsbooks) | 427 comments Hi Rosie, welcome. You should submit your feedback to the publisher as soon as you've finished reading the book, even if it is months in advance, that's what they are looking for. You can hold your review for Goodreads, blogs, etc until closer to the pub date if you want :) Hope that helps

Fictionophile (fictionophile) | 97 comments Welcome to the world of NetGalley Rosie!
Though what Dorie says is true of a lot of publishers, it does not hold true for all.
Some want the review closer to the publication date.
To be sure, always check the individual publisher's "View approval preferences" to find out what they prefer.
For instance, here is what Hachette has to say in their approval preferences:
Hachette Book Group appreciates your interest in our books and respectfully requests that you do not publish reviews until 30 days prior to the book's pub date.

Teresa (teresaoh) Hi Rosie, things can be a little confusing when you first join Netgalley. What I do when I finish a book is write my review and send it to the publisher straight away via the feedback button on Netgalley. If the publisher has stated they don't want you to publish the review until closer to publication date, i will postpone publishing it on goodreads\amazon etc, if they don't I publish it straight away, so I can get it out of the way and move on to the next one. I hate having reviews hanging around for months but if that is what the publisher wants it's best to keep them happy! The best of luck. Just remember to enjoy being on Netgalley and don't do what I did and request too many books at once and get in

Teresa (teresaoh) a muddle (oops)!

They are talking about "publishing reviews" on blogs, websites, etc. I do believe they always like to get the NetGalley review as soon as you read the book. That's what I've been doing for 2 years and it seems to be fine, I get 98% of what I request :)

Teresa, pretty much what I said :)

Teresa (teresaoh) Yes Dorie, only you say it better than me. I'm a bit long winded :)

Rosie | 9 comments Hi Dorie, Fictionophile & Teresa:

Thank you for the welcome and thank you all so much for taking the time to help me -- it's appreciated. I'm really glad I found this group and I look forward to being an active member.

I hope you all are staying warm, I'm in Chicago and we're having frigid temperatures this week.

-Rosie

Hi Rosie,
I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and we are going through a cold snap as well. It is 0 degrees now and is going down overnight.

Dorie - Cats&Books :) (dorie--catsbooks) | 427 comments Hi Rose (waves hand), I'm in Wisconsin, Mequon, north of Milwaukee, we are freezing also! This is a really great group of people who will do everything they can to help you if you need anything. We're a fun, easy going group, at least I think so :)

Kathryn (an80slady6886) Hey neighbors! I am in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago. It is going to be freezing here as well.

Rosie | 9 comments What?! I'm not the only one freezing. I think it's time for some hot chocolate tonight.

@Fictionophile ... I've been to Canada and I love Tim Horton's coffee so much that I receive it as a Christmas present every year. I wish the TH franchise would come to Chicago. I love the donuts, too.

@Dorie ... thank you for the welcome. Many years ago I visited Door County and it is very lovely and definitely worth the trip.

@Kathryn ... howdy neighbor ... I'm in the Western Suburbs and it's going to be even colder for us tomorrow. Brrrrrrrr!

Teresa (teresaoh) Hi Rosie, I live in Ireland where so far this year we are having a mild winter, and unusually low rainfall. Long may it continue!
Welcome to the group.

Be sure to download all of them in case they get archived soon. Once they're archived, even if you've been approved, they aren't available for download anymore.

If you use a Kindle, you can have them sent to your Kindle address and they will 'keep' forever. They don't expire the way epubs do.

If you use Adobe for epubs, it will tell you how many days you have left (I seem to remember it starts at 55), and you can make a note of the archive date in the NOTE section of your book list, and if you haven't read it yet, you can download it again to get another 55 days.

Hi Patty: Happy New Year!

I'm so sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for the hand-holding, it's appreciated. I have read two books and now I'm on to my third book, I have one more to read after that. Now, I'm just researching what elements to include in the feedback to the publisher.

Katie (kbooklover) | 2 comments How does reviewing an archived book affect your stats? I'm a newbie too and downloaded a few books a couple weeks ago. I just noticed one of them was archived on May 16. I have access to it on Kindle still. Is it the same process for reviewing it or am I penalized for letting it go to archive? How does it affect my stats?

To my knowledge Katie - as long as you submit a review for the book, whether it has been archived or not, is the main goal of NetGalley. You use the same process for reviewing it AND that review counts favorably toward your feedback ratio.

I have submitted many reviews for books that have already been archived and as soon as I submit the review my feedback ratio reflects a positive change.

Thank you. That makes sense.
