⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) ※The Hobby Corner January 2017 Challenge※

descriptiondescription

You never know where an idea for a challenge can come from...and this one is no exception! A conversation with my husband led to this little challenge: A feature on a specific hobby every month!

For January, I'm featuring an indoors hobby that can keep you warm: crochet!

There are three different ways to participate in this challenge: do a spell out of any of the words I'll list below, complete a number of tasks that correspond to a level, or mix and match to meet that level goal!

How To’s:
• Pick your level
• Read one book per task/letter
Articles 'A', 'And', 'An', and 'The' do not count to match to a letter in the spell outs!
• Re-reads are allowed
• There are no page minimums or limits unless noted

Duration: January 1st to January 31st, 2017

Levels:
Threaded: 4 or less books
Felted: 5-7 books
Woven In: 8-10 books
Hooked: 11+ books

Spell Outs
Crochet ◈ Hook ◈ Yarn ◈ Crochet Thread ◈ Tape Measure ◈ Large-Eye Needle ◈ Gauge Measure ◈ Scissors ◈ Stitch Marker ◈ Slip Knot ◈ Chain Stitch ◈ Slip Stitch ◈ Single Crochet ◈ Half-Double Crochet ◈ Double Crochet ◈ Magic Ring ◈ Weave In Tails

Tasks
Crochet is derived from the Old French Term for small hook and the Old Germanic term for hook: Read a Historical book set in what would be modern day France or Germany
Crochet Patterns were first published in 1823: Read a book set in the 1820s or a book where something is published
Irish Crochet was introduced as a method of famine relief: Read a book set in Ireland or where the characters visit Ireland, a historical novel set in Ireland during the Great Potato Famine, or a book with lace on the cover
Crochet suffered a decline until the late 1940s to the 1960s, when new patterns were produced for home items such as doilies and pot holders: Read a book set from or published in 1946 to 1966, a book where a doily or pot holder can be seen on the cover, or where one of these items is used or created
Granny Squares were first made popular in the late 1960s to 1970s: Read a book set or published in the 1960s or 1970s or a book where someone is covered with an afghan
Crochet declined for a second time until the early 21st century: Read a book published anytime between 2001 to present
Learn to Crochet Kits are produced for children or teens: Read a Children's or Young Adult book
Crochet is being featured on the fashion scene: Read a book where a character works in the fashion industry (model also counts!)
Crochet has also been seen on Project Runway: Read a book where a character goes on television
Crochet patterns and items are often sold on Etsy or Ravelry: Read a book where a character goes into business for themselves, or creates something to sell
Crochet items have also been given to charities: Read a book where a character helps a person in need or works for a charity
Crochet has also been used architecturally in a process called Yarn Bombing, where a crocheted cloth is used to beautify a normally austere outdoor item like a lamppost or tree: Read a book where a bombing occurs or where a character decorates something outside

This is one of my personal hobbies, so if you have questions about something, feel free to ask!

Also, if you have a hobby you'd like to see featured over the next year, send me a PM! I do still have a couple of slots open in the 2017 schedule!

Nell I don't understand the first task:

Read a Historical book set in what would be modern day France or Germany

How is it both historical and modern day?

Hi Nell. I think this means it's geographically where modern-day France and Germany are located, but the story occurs in sometime before this century.

Jonquil is correct, Nell. France and Germany were not always known as France and Germany, so this task is looking for books set within the time period where they weren't referenced as such (think 9th to 14th century), but are set where those present day countries of France and Germany currently are located.

There is a mix and match option for this challenge, so if my above explanation is too confusing, just skip it.
