John Seymour The ever popular Wuthering Heights was the Popular Vote Winner. If on a Winter's Night a Traveler out-Weighted Agnes Grey and The Stranger to be the Weighted Vote Winner. The remaining 28 books that received votes were loaded into the randomizer which selected Jack Maggs as the Random Selection.

To summarize:

Popular Vote Winner: Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë

Weighted Vote Winner: If on a Winter's Night a Traveler, by Italo Calvino

Random Selection: Jack Maggs, by Peter Carey.

Kristel gets sole credit for Jack Maggs.

So how do you plan to start off the new year? Will you read some or all of our BOTMs? Continue reading Dostoevsky? Start the Annual Read?

Finally, Wuthering Heights will disappear from my TBR after 7 years. I will also read Jack Maggs, whose author I have already sampled with the True History of the Kelly Gang (which was excellent). I will give Calvino and Dosto a miss, having read both. As I don't have to read the first Seasonal, I will also start the Annual Read and, time permitting, attack the new Randomized List that Book Worm should give me for Xmas (or New Year).

I will read Wuthering Heights and start the seasonal read The Idiot.

message 4: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tstan) | 559 comments I've read all 3. I'll read The Idiot and try to read one of the Byatts. Maybe the 6th or 7th try will be the charm...

message 5: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments I've read Wuthering Heights and On A Winter's Night, so will just join in discussions with what I can remember. Jack Maggs isn't on Audible or Kindle or in my libraries so will have to hunt him down. I started reading Carey with his first short story collection, and have read quite a few over the years. I am going to read The Idiot (I have been listening to the other Dostoyevskys) and start the annual read. I am right into The Story of the Stone at the moment and am sorry I have left it so late.

Paula S (paula_s) | 220 comments Jack Maggs seems really interesting, so I'm glad Kristel voted for it. I've read Wuthering Height before, but I might read it again if I find the time. It's worth rereading.

Sushicat | 292 comments Hmm - none of those sits on the shelf... I've ordered Wuthering Heights from the library.

I will read Calvino's book and hopefully get Jack Magg's read too since I am the reason for it's being one of BOTM. I also plan to read the Idiot but not sure when I will start. Not sure I will try for the annual. I didn't do well with it last year and I purchased it. I have to decide if I want to spend the money.

Like Patrick, I am looking forward to what Book gives me for Christmas or NYE with the randomized.

Have we already decided the Annual read of 2017?? I haven't been around this year - have I..."

Yup - Romance of the Three Kingdoms - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 10: by John (new)

John Seymour I have Calvino on my shelf, so will read that. I have a collection of the complete works of two of the Bronte sisters, but it's sitting on my shelf in Florida. If that includes Wuthering Heights, I will read it. Otherwise, probably not.

I am happy with the broader spread of my reading this year, though unhappy with the reduced reading time and the number of BOTMs that were on my shelf and I didn't read. My priority this year is going to be to read BOTMs that are on my shelf, and the seasonal and annual reads.

So I will start off with The Idiot and Calvino, Wuthering Heights if I have it. Three Kingdoms is in Florida, and I am stuck in Minnesota (son needs surgery), so that is going to have to wait. I will try to figure out how to get questions posted before the end of the month.

message 11: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 166 comments I definitely plan on reading If on a Winter's Night a Traveler as it conveniently fits Play Book Tag's "foreign literature" theme for January as well.

I've already read Wuthering Heights.

To have any chance of reading everything I want to read this year, I think I need to try for one BOTM . . .which seems remotely feasible. But I'm super intrigued by the annual read and think I will give the first volume a shot and see how it goes. I would love to read the Seasonal reads, but I'm trying to be realistic . . .with 50 books a year seemingly my limit, I'm going to need to make some choices. I downloaded The Idiot, but that probably is not going to happen.

message 12: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 166 comments Thanks Shuva for that guidance on The Idiot. I am going to stick with trying the Annual Read then which sounds much more up my alley. Appreciate the insight!!!

message 13: by Sara (new)

Sara (mootastic1) | 23 comments Like Anita, my goal is really just one BOTM, and for the same reason I will be reading the Calvino. I doubt I will get to either the seasonal or annual read.

Hi John. Sorry to hear that your son needs surgery. I wish him well. Have a Merry Christmas.

I am sad not to get a chance to read Anne Brontë as she is the only one I haven't read. I said something about rereading Wuthering Heights and someone sent this to me so I thought I would share.

It's fun.

Thanks Diane. It's not serious, but he needs to get his shoulder repaired - he's had 7 or 8 dislocations in the same shoulder. They started with accidents (rough goofing around in college), but the last two times were while he was sleeping. That's a rough way to wake up.

Oh, that sounds like he really waited a long time to repair. He will feel much better once the surgery pain is gone, I trust.

Not so long. The first time was about three years ago, maybe four. Doctor recommended rehab after the first couple. Then a couple more, then a flurry over the last year.

Becky I definitely plan on getting to Wuthering Heights. Maybe starting The Idiot, as well. I don't have that one, so we'll see how January goes with my other challenges.

message 21: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Carter | 35 comments If I finish the Kool-Aid Acid book before January, I will only be 3 books behind on 2016's BOTM. As for 2017, I will just stick to 1 per BOTM and read other books that I've been wanting to read. Life's too short.

I've read Wuthering Heights and Jack Maggs sounds interesting to read. And maybe Winter's Night...we'll see.

message 22: by Connie (new)

Connie D | 91 comments I've already read Wuthering Heights a couple times. I'll try to read Calvino.

message 23: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 95 comments Read and liked them all..especially Calvino and Bronte (when I was younger, anyway).

No problem, I have plenty of catch-up reading to do in January to start to make up for my s-l-o-w progress in 2016!

I'll read the random selection. I've read all the other two. I'm still scrambling to finish up the annual read and seasonal read. Probably won't both happen before the end of the year.

message 26: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments If anyone can, you will! I've set aside this week for the annual read because I am really enjoying it! 18th century Beijing soap opera!

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) My plan is to read the yearly, The Idiot, Wuthering Heights. I haven't ever read any of them. I plan to only read what I have on my shelves. I have been "practicing" being more consistent and setting aside time to read, so I am hoping to finally make a small dent to the list.

LOL, that resolution didn't last long.

Amie (amie-b) | 80 comments I've read Wuthering Heights and while I liked it, I won't reread it now. My library doesn't have the other two, so I will sit out this month. Maybe try to read The Idiot.
