-read a new-to-you author,
-read a new-to-you series
-read a new-to-you genre
-read a new book (published 2016/2017)
-read a book with less than 100 ratings on Goodreads
-read an ARC

Points:

*50 - 99 pages = 0.5 points
*100 - 199 pages = 1 point
*200 - 299 pages = 2 points
*300 - 399 pages = 3 points
*400 - 499 pages = 4 points
*500 - 599 pages = 5 points
*600+ pages = 6 points
(maximum of 6 points per book)
*Buddy reads DOUBLE your points score, so a 300 page book + buddy read = 6 points. 600 page book + buddy read = 12 points. (Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in our group.)

T.J. Burns | 2698 comments I love these challenges! I agree with Coreen -- it's an amazing experience. I like the more complicated challenges, for which the team has to coordinate and strategize (like scrabble or family fortunes). In those types of challenges, we need to communicate more. They also inspire me to read things I may not have otherwise read. (And it's more about strategy than quantity -- I never have time to read as much as I'd like, but I'm good with strategy... ;). This one seems pretty easy. We just need the book to fit one of the categories and we're set. The only thing we can do to maximize points is to get as many buddy reads for our books scheduled as possible.

@ Astrit: Where are you from? I see you've read books in Spanish and Japanese... cool!

@Coreen: I LOVE your rating system. You had me seriously laughing out loud!

@Soibhan: Oooh, I want to read that too! Are you joining the group buddy read? Oh ya, I see that you are. I'll put the link here in case anyone else in the team is interested:

T.J. Burns | 2698 comments I'm planning to read mostly ARCs as usual: Lifeblood (Everlife, #2) by Gena Showalter The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden The Best Kind of Magic by Crystal Cestari A List of Cages by Robin Roe Lou Lou and Pea and the Mural Mystery by Jill Diamond
I need to finish RoseBlood by A.G. Howard and The Bone Sparrow by Zana Fraillon

Maybe I'll join the buddy read for Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult on the 7th:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
and the group buddy read for Verity (Cursed, #1) by Claire Farrell on the 15th:

Oh, wow! That's ambitious of you to join us at all, Daniela. I guess we'll have to provide you with your well-needed, well-deserved breaks! Hey, if you proofread your bachelor's thesis, shouldn't that count as a book? It's definitely something new! ;) Good luck on getting that done and doing it well. What's the topic?

Just Call Me Astrit (xdrache) | 6 comments My readings will be:
-read a new-to-you author:
Persona normal by Benito Taibo
(this a new author for me, but if I found a new author with a new novel I'm gonna upload it :) this book is in spanish)

-read a new-to-you genre
Paris Letters by Janice Macleod
My actual genres are: Young Adult, Fiction, Dystopia, Romance, Horror and Comedy.

-read a new book (published 2016/2017)
Children of Eden by Joey Graceffa
Published on October 2016

*PROBABLY*
I would read a new serie, and read book with less 100 ratings,
Serie will be:
Rebels: City of Indra: The Story of Lex and Livia
Because why not? :)

And I have a doubt: what is "arc"?

Answering my old messages: Hi! I'm from México and speak spanish and english, and Im trying to learn Norwegian online xD

ARC- Advanced Readers Copy. These are the books given to readers prior to their release dates for review purposes.

Kendall and Kylie wrote that book, right? I heard it's terrible. Hahaha

message 25: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 81 comments It's about transfering rituals in another context. And no, won't count as it won't be more than 30 pages :p

But I should definitely get at least 3 books done, as I have to review them till the end of january

message 26: by Wiesel (new)

Wiesel I actually started reading "Die Känguru Chroniken" (German) today, which is the first book in a new-to-me series and I wanted to read the two sequels next. But do the sequels still count as a new-to-me series then? Because technically after reading the first book the series isn't new to me anymore?
(Sorry, that's my first reading challenge, I'm kind of confused.)

message 30: by cors (last edited Jan 02, 2017 06:02AM) (new)

cors (corsdarone) i'm currently reading The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima It'll be under the category of "new-to-you-author" or new-to-you-series" maybe I'll finish it tomorrow since it's a book with 500+ pages :)

message 31: by Anna (new)

Anna Fodor (anneemf) | 42 comments hey guys, sorry i was a bit late I'm having exams this week. I have a question. I started reading Anna Bank's Of Poseidon on the 31. of December and I've read the 2 other books in January, does it count as a new-to-you-author and a new-to-you-series? thanks :)

message 32: by T.J. (new)

T.J. Burns | 2698 comments Anna wrote: "hey guys, sorry i was a bit late I'm having exams this week. I have a question..."

Hi Anna! Welcome to the challenge!

I would say the first one could count as a new-to-you-author, but all three should count as a new-to-you-series. Just subtract the pages you read on December 31st when you post to our team review page. You only get credit for pages read in this month. But you can say, for example, under Page Count: 367 (out of 418) pages read in January 2017.

message 33: by T.J. (last edited Jan 03, 2017 08:04AM) (new)

T.J. Burns | 2698 comments @Anna: I saw your post on our review page. I'm pretty sure it will fit the new-to-you-series category.

You need to post a link to your review, though. In this case the link would be:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

You also need to write at least 4 sentences about how you felt about the book. It can be anything: writing style, characters, character development, dialogue, plot, general feeling... anything really.

(Oh, and change the starting date to January 1st if you read the whole book this month. Otherwise you need to give the number of pages read this month).

Then do the same thing for the third book -- in this case the link will be:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 34: by Susan (new)

Susan (jazzescrapper) | 2605 comments Quick question. The book I am reading. Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater , I am buddy reading it on another challenge with someone else. Does that still count as a buddy read or does the buddy have to be from our group. Just checking. Thank you

message 35: by T.J. (last edited Jan 03, 2017 02:26PM) (new)

T.J. Burns | 2698 comments @Susan: It has to be a buddy read within this group. You could grab a buddy and do two buddy reads at the same time -- you could post the same comments.

Just drop a note here to see if anyone is interested.
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Then once you've agreed upon a date, you could ask Sarah to update our group's buddy read thread for Shiver with the new date:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

It shouldn't be hard to find someone to join you, people are always asking for buddies for Shiver.

Anna Fodor (anneemf) | 42 comments I'm reading The Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Screenplay, it can be a new book? So I mean it's a real book but it's a screenplay, i haven't found anything about that. :/ thanks☺️

That's fine, Anna. Sarah has a special rating for the page number for poetry and plays (I think it's 1/3 -- but it still counts).

If you join in on the buddy read that started on the first and post at least 4 comments, you can get double points for our team:

Welcome, Ohleaves!
Sure! You can post any book you've read since the beginning of this month. If you finished a book this month, post the pages read this month and you can get credit. It's fine if the book is in Indonesian, but the review has to be in English (4 sentences minimum).

Happy Reading!

I didn't think I would be reading that many either and I am on book 3. I knew we were going to have a baby this month and it would be a busy month for this grandma but I have managed just fine. Now off to read Three Dark Crowns so I don't fall to far behind my reading partner.

message 46: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 81 comments Does anyone know how this is working with scripts? I read Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling but not quite sure..

I read another one already, and am in the middle of my next book. So I'll definitely get 2 reviews in :)

T.J. Burns | 2698 comments Hi Team!

Sorry I haven't been too communicative. I've been sick, so...

But I got a bit of reading done. I finished a buddy read yesterday for a quirky and enjoyable book: The Impossible Fortress by Jason Rekulak , which will be coming out early next month.

I'm currently participating in buddy reads for The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden , The Bone Sparrow by Zana Fraillon , both of which came out earlier this month, and both which are heavy, intense, and well-written. I'm also reading Lou Lou and Pea and the Mural Mystery by Jill Diamond and Lola in geheimer Mission (Lola, #3) by Isabel Abedi with my daughter.

I finished a buddy read that I'd started last month for RoseBlood by A.G. Howard , and read The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher and Watch Me Fall Apart (Scars Run Deep Book 2) by Lola Rooney , as well as Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel for my book club.

How are you all doing?
