I'm cold. So, the January reading challenge is to read a book that'll warm you up! Read a book where the setting is warm and sunny. When you tell us the book title you read, also let us know where it takes place. Have fun.

Lisa | 57 comments i'm reading a book called forbidden game by lj smith and the book takes place somewhere in California.

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments Can we do it as a time of year rather than as a place? I'm not sure what to read, but being able to read something set in summer would open possibilities.

Debbie,

Yup. As long as your book takes place where it's warm that's fine. So if it's New York, but during the summer, that's great. Make sure you explain how it's warm and sunny though.

Teresa | 255 comments I'm going with A Most Peculiar Malaysian Murder. The author is a woman of color who lives outside the US. This book is the first in a series, which is why I'm reading it, even though it's Gr rating is below my usual cutoff point. Malaysia is equatorial, with an average temp of 80.

Teresa | 255 comments In Gr's Listopia (access through the web site, not the app) is a list titled Books Set in Tropical Locations.

Thanks! I was unsure about how to find a title.

Becky | 280 comments I am going to read The Weekenders which takes place during the summer on Belle Isle, North Carolina.

Now that today is rainy and windy I REALLY need to read something that takes place in a warm setting. Any new books you guys?

message 10: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 255 comments So, I changed books. My first choice is only available at the library. My current choice is available through Overdrive. It's Death on the Nile, by Agatha Christie. I'm assuming it takes place in Egypt.

message 11: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 182 comments I am almost 1/3 of the way through Kate DiCamillo's "Raymie Nightingale." It's set in Florida. (Enjoying the short chapters, although that does result in a lot of chapters.)

Good assumption. And it's an Hercule Poirot mystery. Excellent choice.

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments My choice for the challenge is The Fever Code by James Dashner, the newest work in the Mazerunner series. Location is a future Earth following a devastating solar flare which made most places on Earth really warm, some so hot they are uninhabitable.

If people are still looking for ideas, I looked for tropical books in listopia and there seems to be a lot of fun books that take place in tropical paradises, or desert islands.

Alyson | 98 comments I just finished "Full of Beans", by Jennifer L. Holm. It takes place in Key West during the Depression, and it's actually something of a prequel to her Newbery Honor title "Turtle in Paradise."

message 20: by Casandria (new)

Casandria Last weekend I read I'll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios. It takes place in central California during a long hot summer. A very good book, and one to remind me that there are warm days coming!

message 21: by Linda (last edited Jan 22, 2017 08:14PM) (new)

Linda Nielson | 280 comments I hope this book counts. I read The Orphan Keeper. It takes place, for a good part, in India. The ending also warms the heart. It was very good.

message 22: by Greg (new)

Greg (danceyeah) | 289 comments Red Rising by Pierce Brown. It's set inside the planet Mars, at least in part, and it's described as almost unbearably hot.

message 23: by Debbie (last edited Jan 25, 2017 05:42AM) (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments This has been a fun one. What's up for February? Since it's Valentine's Day, how about some poetry; it's supposed to be romantic. For those who don't like poetry, consider Dr. Seuss. It's all poetry.

Thank you for the suggestion. However, the February challenge will be something a little different.

message 30: by Becky (new)

Becky | 280 comments I finished The Weekenders. It took place in North Carolina during the summer. I know it is intended as a light beach read, but I didnt like the characters and cant recommend it.

In all fairness, Elizabeth, when you said that February would be a little different, you got our reading lover's heart going. The romance theme is not different... :(
