Elena (elenalikesbooks) | 95 comments Uprooted by Naomi Novik is wonderfully immersing! Also The Goblin Emperor. Both do fascinating things with fantasy tropes and have characters to root for. They were both books I finished within one or two sittings because I just couldn't bear to part with them.

Because of your time limit, I'm going to do something I don't usually in this group and suggest a couple I haven't read: The Underground Railroad and Dark Matter were BIG favorites with librarians this year, and I like to think librarians have pretty good taste. ;)

Elena (elenalikesbooks) | 95 comments Oh, and if you haven't read All the Light We Cannot See yet, that one got rave reviews everywhere. Occasionally compared to The Nightingale, though I often find myself recommending them in reverse--The Nightingale to fans of All the Light We Cannot See.

Nick | 3 comments The Nix is immersive. I'd read 100 pages without looking up.

Jaye The Only Alien On the Planet by Kristen Randle.
excellent. excellent.

It's not about an alien, but I can't tell you the main story because it would be a huge spoiler.

Hmmm, intriguing! Should I stay away from the synopsis and go into it completely blind?"

The synopsis is fairly vague so that won't be a problem. I'd steer clear of the reviews though.

I'd second Major Pettigrew's Last Stand
