Nóri | 38 comments I'll admit I was a bit disappointed by the early chapters, since I read somewhere else that this book is basically non-stop action from the very beginning, and that was NOT how it read for me... and I felt bad for being a bit bored by such a classic that I felt like I should love. But now that I'm more along in the story (just had the dinner party - that's not really a spoiler) it's starting to really pick up! And it keeps bringing me back because there's something in this world that makes me want to learn more about it...

Yeah I feel like the beginning is mostly set up - getting to know the characters and the planet and the potential schemes. I just finished the first section "Dune" last night and it's definitely picked up and I'm totally sucked in!

Nóri | 38 comments I got halfway through and unfortunately I'm still mostly just bored. I think I'm gonna put it away for now and read something that I actually enjoy, because I fell asleep on this book more times than I can count, and I no longer have the motivation to keep at it. Maybe sometime later I will finish it.

I am with you in this. I have been reading this for the past 10 days and I am now near the end of part 1. By far, this is my slowest sci-fi/fantasy till date. Even I am considering putting it away for some time and start it again in october.

Agree. I read it many years ago, got about halfway through and thought it was tedious and boring. I skimmed for a while but just could not make it through. I love long involved books, things like Dickens, Shogun and tastes differ of course but this was just a drag IMHO.

Aliana | 7 comments I love this book and look forward to reading with you all. The movie was also very excellent, I must add.

message 57: by Mike (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mike | 8 comments Read this some 30 years ago and have been wanting to reread it. Seems like a great time to pick it up, but likely to go past January

Shannon | 41 comments I'm going to jump in on this one. I started reading it in December after watching the movie, and I'm up to page 241. So far I'm really loving it! Usually I hate to watch the movie first, but I'm kind of glad I did on this one. The book is a little confusing at times for me, and so watching the movie beforehand has helped a lot with that.

Excited to hear what you all think of it! :)

Laura | 689 comments I’m going to join this month; never read the book nor seen the film so I’m going In without any clue what this is about so this should be interesting

Borum | 3 comments I've read in the audible review that the audiobook is abridged and is missing some passages with switching voice actors, so that it's like a dramatization. I was surprised by this as it's more than 21 hours long! (How long would a full unabridged version be?)
However I'm listening to it as I want to know how the book's characters and special words are pronounced. (gom jabbar?) I haven't watched the movie yet but will try after I finish the book.

Rebecca Kasper (reeburka) i’ve already read the other two current reads for this month and i can tell this book is going to take a while to get through, especially with the storyline and characters. i’m so excited, though!

Natalie | 15 comments I saw the movie and it was ok..it felt incomplete but then I learned there was more to the story so I'm interested in reading it though!

Heather Milne | 12 comments I am planning to start reading this tomorrow. I have heard from friends that Dune is a good series and that the new version of the film was good. So I thought before watching it I would read at least the first book.

Justine Reinosa (justwinkie29) | 7 comments I am not participating in this read this month. I decided to watch the film about a month ago and couldn’t finish it. I felt that there was no real plot, and the theme and subplots were all over the place. It just didn’t hold my attention one bit. I turned off the film halfway through and it unfortunately ruined the idea of the book for me.
