I know how you feel, Melissa. You should read the letter she wrote to readers about the ending. Here's the link:

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 1631 comments I gave up Karin Slaughter after Beyond Reach too and haven't picked up any of her books since. I read her letter back in the day but considering that she (view spoiler), her reasoning made no sense so that just made me madder. I think she did it purely for shock value.

Anyhoo, I just finished reading Far from the Madding Crowd and enjoyed it despite the writing being a little dense and hard to decipher at times (it was published in 1874). This was one of the few cases where having watched the movie adaptation first enhanced my reading enjoyment.

Erin (erin36) | 484 comments I've recently finished Dead of Winter (The Arcana Chronicles, #3) by Kresley Cole , book 3 in the Arcana Chronicles series. I am HOOKED! This series has made night wakings with the babies much more bearable as I'm constantly looking for time to read these books. What better hour than when all is quiet in the middle of the night? :) On to book 4!

In the later books, it transitioned to be more romance than historical fiction...less about the Guards and more about the couple. However, this one is more like the earlier books and I'm really enjoying.
