Kristie | 19193 comments Heather - I remember having similar thoughts about Mac. (view spoiler)

Also, I don't read too many fantasy series, but I loved this one and Iron Druid was great too. I think they're the only two that I kept up with. I hope you enjoy Iron Druid too.

I think you'll like it :)

I have to admit I'm already a bit hazy on the details. Was it (view spoiler)

Lanelle | 4026 comments So I'm finally starting the book. And I'll admit I've read it numerous times before. It will be different looking for discussion points this time.

It's been mentioned before how much people liked the way Mercy treated Mac. I admire the way she tried not to push him into lying. Seems like a good way to behave around folks.

I thought maybe the bit about why people hated Mercy was a kind of social commentary. (view spoiler) so it made sense to me.

The cover image of Mercy changes drastically on the books. Perhaps we should have a poll to see which one people think is most like their mental image of Mercy.

I looked at the covers but I don't think they change much at all. She's presented on all of them with tight jeans, a short top that leaves her belly (which looks like a top model belly and not a very realistic one) exposed, and breasts that almost pop out of her top. Some covers are worse than others (more popping breasts, more belly exposed), but same general picture.

I think there are alternative covers that also show Mercy but in a less objectifying / more dressed way.

Kristie | 19193 comments One thing I noticed is that her tattoos change on the covers. They should have kept that consistent.

Peggy, excellent points - you led me to see them with new eyes. To me the faces and body size of the woman changed but I now se that they are are similar in a disappointing way.
Interesting contrast to the book theme for next month

I read somewhere that the tattoos represent the stories in the books, but I haven't looked/researched myself.

message 113: by Kristie, Moderator (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kristie | 19193 comments That would be fine, Heather. But once you put a tattoo on her it should stay. It's strange that it's not consistent.

message 114: by Jenn (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jenn | 3029 comments I agree with regard to the tattoos, they should build as her story progresses, not come and go at the artists whim. Just another reason I try not to look to hard at a cover, as rarely is the artist also the writer,so it's just their interpretation of a book that they may, or may not, have read.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I didn't notice the tattoos, but I agree they should be consistent.

Lanelle | 4026 comments I've just finished the book. It was amazing as always. There was a line that caught my eye this time: "...I try not to worry about one impossible task until I've completed the first..."

In general I've liked the book covers. I think they reflect the world that Marcy lives in more than they reflect her personally.

Has anyone been on the author's website? (http://www.hurog.com) There are a few snippets for the new Mercy book being released in March. I can't wait.

message 117: by Jenn (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jenn | 3029 comments I agree Lanelle, Mercy definitely has a life outlook that I can admire. More than hat even, she has an understanding of people (and kinds of people), and how they fit together.

message 118: by Lara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lara | 1426 comments I've read this book twice before, but listened to the audiobook this time. The first time I read the book I wasn't interested in continuing with the series because of the love triangle foundation. A few years later I reread it and then got into the series. It is one of my favorites and the last book was awesome.

@Sarah, this series is definitely urban fantasy--there is romance, but it isn't the focus and takes several books to develop. While the relationship is important in later books, the main plot in each revolves around some other issue.

@Rus, the partner series that begins with the novella Alpha & Omega has more to do with werewolves. It overlaps time and characters with the Mercy Thompson series, but there aren't as many books in it. You can enjoy this series without reading the other one just fine.

@Lynn, you're right--this series does build on previous books, but does not have a major mystery that drives the plot across books. So, while I think it's best to read them in order (due to character development and world building), each book does each wrap up pretty nicely.

Somewhere I once saw a great photo of a pendant that fit with the author's idea of Mercy's sheep. It was really cute, but I haven't been able to find the post.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11458 comments I can't believe I missed getting a badge for reading this. I finished it 6 Jan. Made one measly comment and forgot to come back to discuss more.

I just noticed I hadn't earned my badge. Completely my fault! ☻

Jennifer Burton Loved this book!! I read it once, then after I got Blood Bound the next book in the series had to reread it.
