Thoughts?

I read this some weeks ago. Thoroughly enjoyed it and a fairly quick read. Some parts were a bit predictable to me, maybe because of a general overload of YA in 2016 :). The way Tahir crafts the story and characters (ànd side characters) is inspiring. I especially loved Elias and his inner conflict. Some trigger warnings for this book maybe. I'm excited to check out the sequel in the coming weeks, I hope you all enjoy this book too!

I just finished this a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely amazing! The characters were believable and their conflicts are out-of-the-box. Life is not easy for Elias and Laia, and Tahir doesn't try to sugar-coat anything. I only managed to read 25 books in 2016 because it got to the point where they all felt the same-- yet I finished this one in a matter of days. I would recommend to everyone. I'm probably going to reread it to join in the discussions!

I'm going to start this next week once I clear through my current backlog. So excited for this read!

I've had a sample of this on my Kindle forever. It's getting where I'm reading too many books at once but I'll fit this in somehow.

I read this few months ago and absolutely loved it! My heart couldn't handle all the emotions. I can't wait until I get my hands on the second book.

I was somewhat underwhelmed by this book: I was expecting something really strong based on the reviews and its popularity, but I thought it was more derivative, hitting same beats with little inventiveness as some other active series, could have used tighter and richer worldbuilding, and had a mixed bag of characters to get behind and root for. That said, it was easy reading, fast paced, with some interesting ideas and it wasn't boring. I gave it three stars overall.

I'd pick up the sequel eventually to see if it's equally fun reading AND the worldbuilding and characterization improve (already got a free copy) but I'm not really in a rush to do so.

Present tense writing. That's an automatic reject from me. :(

This book is AHmazing so far! I love the main characters. They are so complex and different from the common protagonists. Unlike most strong female leads, Laia is unsure of herself and still growing into her shoes. She is not the stereotypical brave, strong female lead that we have all come to love. This makes Laia's character interesting to read about and very relateable!

My favorite scene so far would have to be when Laia and Elias first meet.

Really grateful to whoever recommended this one. Only problem is, I'm feeling a little sleep deprived now! Thought I knew where this was going to go after the first 50 pages, but it keeps surprising me.

Just finished and loved it! I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. My only issue was that some of the romance felt almost like instalove, which I'm definitely not a fan of. But this book was full of such beautiful writing and amazing storylines, that the instalove was easy to overlook. Looking forward to reading book 2!

I liked the book and I loved the world it was set it. I'm not a huge fan of Helene but I loved Elias and Laia.

Same here! Helene got on my nerves in An Ember in the Ashes. Though, in A Torch Against the Night we see greater development of her character and I started to like her :)
