Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I don't know if we needed a new thread for serial killing in 2017, but here we go.

Someone had asked for a thread specific to orphans. I'm fine with including orphans in this thread, but if a separate thread would be useful to others, please feel free to start one.

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I'm going to take a different approach to series this year. I have so many (too many) series on the go and it's driving me crazy. Usually, my M.O. has been to read the books in the order I purchase them. That has resulted in gaps of a year or more between series books.

This year, I'm going to pick several series and concentrate on killing them off. Merrily Watkins is one. I'll come back with a full list once I've figured it out. Good grief, I could spend the whole day organizing my 2017 reading plans. LOL! Obsessed much?

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I think this one thread should suffice for all series reads, orphans too.

I am taking the same approach Janice. I'll be picking a few to focus on then plug away here and there on some of the others which do not have too much of a connected story line.

message 4: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I have so many "firsts" on my TBR shelves, just waiting for me to start more series. *sigh*

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I did not ask for an orphan thread, but I was kicking it around.
I will keep updating my series list in the Serial Killers are not recoverable thread.

Oh - you locked it. So I need to create my own list? Can I still copy my list?

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments You can create a list in this thread Cherie. You should be able to copy the list from the other thread too if you wish.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments 2016 was a dismal year for killing off series. I only finished 7 of them and 4 of those were also started in 2016.

I am going to attempt to kill three specific series this year:
1. Dr. Siri Paiboun (5/11)
2. Crowner John Mystery (10/15)
3. Amerotke (5/7)

I also have a few orphan's to read:
1. In This Grave Hour
2. The Inheritance
3. The Flame Bearer
4. Monster Hunter Nemesis
5. Stiletto

The only thing is you won't be able to copy the links, Cherie.

message 9: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - The links won't copy because the topic is locked and I can't edit to do the cut and paste?

Do you mean the book titles and author name links or the series links? (I did not have any links to the series in my list.)

Ah. I didn't think about links.

Ariane | 947 comments What do you call "orphans"?
I think I will borrow your idea Cherie and make a list here of the series I add and the ones I finish in 2017.

message 16: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Jan 05, 2017 06:32AM) (new)

Kristie | 19169 comments Ariane - When you finish a series, but then a new book in the series comes out, it is an orphan from a killed off series.

I have a few series that I want to kill off this year. They are all short though, 1-2 books left, and a few orphans and short story books associated with killed off series. I have some longer series that I want to read too, but I'm not sure if I'll try to tackle those this year. I'll try to remember to come back here and post if I end up tackling those.

message 17: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Tasha I would like to join back in this year. Like you all I have tons of series to work through but I think I'll just pick one and go from there. I'll have to think about this a bit...decisions decisions...

message 19: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19169 comments That's a good idea, Tasha. I have plenty of longer series, but I'm not ready to tackle them yet. Picking one to work through at a time makes a lot of sense.

Ariane | 947 comments Thank you Kristie, I guess I will have some orphans this year then...

message 21: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I decided to move through the Sebastian St. Cyr series. I've already read the first one and really enjoyed it:

What Angels Fear (Sebastian St. Cyr, #1) by C.S. Harris

Sarah | 18550 comments I started the mistborn series at the end of last year and have just concluded the trilogy - The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages. Technically there are 3 more books in the series but they are spin offs, set in the same world as the original trilogy but decades on with different characters. I'll tackle those another time.

I've moved on to another series to kill, American Gods. This one will be easy as there are only 2 novellas left for me to read.

message 23: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I started two new series and finished the 26th audio book in the Nero Wolfe series. There is only 1 more audio book left of the 27 offered on Overdrive by my library. I am going to miss Michael Pritchard so much! At least I have his sound bytes for Archie and Nero firmly fixed in my head, for when I will be reading the remaining 20 books in print.

I'm excited for you. Mistborn was fantastic. I read the first 3 back to back. Definitely my favourite Sanderson books so far.

message 27: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments I'm off to start my first orphan of the year, The Inheritance from the Charles Lenox series. I think this might be the third orphan I've read from this series, he keeps writing new books!

message 28: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I don't have a copy of Finch's newest book yet, Dawn, but I think it will be my third Orphan for the series too. I waited a long time to read #9 because it was going to be a long time for the next. I purchased the ebook, but I dragged my feet so long that I got to listen to the audio book, when it came out first. I love the narrator's voice so much. He IS Charles to me.

message 29: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments I miss listening to them, I've been seeing/reading them since the 6th book as my library is slow to get the audiobooks for this series.
I really liked this one, I just finished it and thought it great. There are some great bits of historical trivia in this one, where a few phrases are from and food additives, quite interesting.

message 30: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My library bought book 8 on CD, at my special request, after I made them search the country for 3-7 on CD for me. Only 1 and 2 were available in audio on Overdrive. They bought 9 on CD when it was available and I got to listen to it first. I haven't seen the new one listed yet, but I will keep checking.

I hate that they do not keep up with the series audio books on Overdrive. They carry the first few and once you are hooked, you are left high and dry. Older series are more available, but have long wait times for holds and you never know when they will be available. When I started listening to the Nero Wolfe books, almost all were available any time, but all of the sudden they were very popular and the wait times are over two months now. The western series are the same way. I have had Hondo on hold since mid December and there are 4 holds in front of me still. 3 weeks per check out means that I may not get it until April. Too strange. I only have them for 1 week max before I return them. Makes me wonder if people don't realize that they can return them early.

message 31: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments What I hate is when the book I want to listen to disappears entirely from Overdrive, so I could have listened to it a few months ago but now it's gone and then to make matters worse, the library doesn't have any other copies.
Still, my library has an incredible audiobook collection so I can't complain too much and I've just invested in an Audible membership as of this month, so I should be able to fill in anything I desperately need now.

message 32: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments I've started another of my orphan books, the latest Uhtred book The Flame Bearer. So far so good. I always worry when I read a new one of these books that it will be the last in the series, but so far the author hasn't decided to kill him off, fingers crossed that he survives another book.

I think I started but never finished the first one; I remember being lost in the country with the highlanders... I can't wait to have your opinion on the first...

message 38: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Ariane,

I just finished the first one. It got my 4 stars. Rather more steamy sex than plot in the second half, but with the title, what else could one expect? I enjoyed it!
Now, I can finish the second one that I had started first.

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Hi killed a series yesterday by abandoning the final book. Whilst it was kind of a fail, i still feel good to have got rid of another series. It was the Southern Reach Trilogy. Instead I'm starting a new series but it's a new release and there's only one book out at the moment. That feels ok.

message 40: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments I never did make it past the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy, it didn't capture my imagination.

What series are you starting??

message 41: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It's John Scalzi's new space opera. Starts with The Collapsing Empire (on phone so cannot link). I've only read a few pages but it has me interested.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments Have you read other Scalzi?? I've tried two I think and I'm not that keen.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Ariane - I finished the 2nd Children of the Mist books that I had started before I realized that there was one before it. Not quite as steamy as the first, but I liked it. The next one is not available in audio from my library, but I requested that they added it. It might be a while before I get back to them. It was a nice diversion.

Another Diskworld book is done. I liked the witches, but the story rather wandered. I figured out what was going to happen way back, but had I had to hang out, like Death, and wait for things to happen.

message 47: by Ariane (new)

Ariane | 947 comments I am glad you liked it; I might come back to it, if I need some diversion ;)

message 48: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It is finally my turn to give Boneshaker a run. I was able to borrow both the ebook and the audio book at the same time. I just started to listen to the audio book last night.
I am using this for my "name question" on the yearly challenge, because the author is Cherie Priest.

message 49: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I read another orphan. It's the latest installment of the Charley Davidson series, Eleventh Grave in Moonlight. I will likely read the next one when it's published later this year because I want to know how the cliffhanger in this one resolved. But I won't rush out and buy it as soon as it is published. The series is wearing a little thin.

message 50: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm back on the Dark Tower series. It feels good to be back. Resuming with Wizard and Glass. Not sure if i will be committing to completing the series this year or not. Part of me wants to so i am prepared for the tv show later in the year but that's a lot of pages to read!
