Helena Kaler Can the same book be used to fulfill two requirements?

message 2: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments You can interpret the challenge however you want. I think that most people do 1 book per prompt and one prompt per book but it's a personal challenge so you can decide that you will allow 2 prompts per book or whatever. A friend of mine allowed a book to fulfill up to 3 because she knew she couldn't do 52 books in a year (that was in 2015).

message 3: by Helena (new)

Helena Kaler Thanks! I'm starting book one in the "Amulet" series of graphic novels for kids--a book with pics and the first in a series. It comes highly recommended by my 12 year old son, who's devoured all 7 of them.

message 4: by Sherij (new)

Sherij (sheri_j) | 2 comments I have my own set of rules to not double dip and not re-read (unless that is the challenge)

message 5: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisanelsen) | 8 comments Thank you for asking. I'm doing two challenges and was debating about double-dipping. I've decided that I can count a book twice--one for each list, but that's it.

Oooh I bought the Amulet box set for xmas! My teen daughter recommends it. It was sort of an all-around-family gift, my oldest has read the first six, my younger has read the first, and I've read none. Now we can all read all of them!! I'm looking forward to it. But first I need to finish the Zita the Spacegirl series :-) I'm on book 2 right now ...

As to double-dipping, it's up to each reader to decide.

message 7: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (booktally) I hadn't thought about using one book for two prompts, but I think that sounds like an excellent idea! I am participating in three reading challenges; however, and I did decide one book could count towards more than one challenge. Thanks for the idea!

message 8: by Juliebean (new)

Juliebean (juliebean512) | 145 comments I think it's a personal choice. In 2015, I doubled several of the books because I just simply didn't have time to do them all. In 2016, I did finish all - but literally finished the last one at 1132pm on December 31st. This year, I'm going to school and working full time and I may double dip again. I think that the overall objective is to open your horizons to books you might not otherwise have read - and even if you only do that 15 or 20 times instead of 40 or 50, you're still doing well.

Do you mind sharing what the other two reading challenges are that you are doing? Thank you! :-)

Check out this thread for other reading challenges that some of the members are participating in. Some really good challenges are going on!

I did the same thing last year. A book could fulfill multiple prompts across different challenges but not for the same challenge.

But like Tara said, it's a personal challenge so whatever gives you the inspiration you need is good.

message 13: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 242 comments I see the challenge as a way to discover new things and to push myself to read things I might otherwise skip over, but I also want to have time to read more widely in areas I know I enjoy. Occasionally counting a book twice lets me do both. For example, I like to read nonfiction, so every year I read many books with subtitles. That task is not really a "challenge" for me, so I don't mind checking it off the list right away and still counting the book for another task. If I'm in a challenge that strictly forbids that, I don't do it, but for my personal goals those challenges are unnecessarily restrictive.

message 14: by Anne (new)

Anne Kennedy | 18 comments I think double dipping spoils the challenge. A book certainly can fall into different categories, but the purpose of the challenge is to increase reading. It also makes one become more aware of other books. The 2017 challenge with the advanced has 52 suggestions. That is 1 for every week of the year. To me that means no double dipping.

message 15: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 71 comments I don't double-dip...but I do use my reading of a particular book for several different challenges...at least potentially if it fits some or all. I do the 52 Weeks challenge as well as Pop Sugar...
an alphabetical author challenge and a geographic challenge...and even a challenge to read books published in all the years 1900-2017. So, it would be impossible to complete all thse without using the same book sometimes.

message 16: by Anne (new)

Anne Kennedy | 18 comments I will have to look up author and geographic challenges. That sounds enticing. I would double dip that since they are different programs.

message 17: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 464 comments For me, it depends on the challenge. Last year, anyway, Book Riot specifically stated double-dipping was fine, so I do so on that one. I don't think PopSugar has specified one way or the other. In 2015 I double-dipped, but for some reason that felt like cheating, so in 2016 I didn't. I wound up not finishing by 8 books, so I rolled them over into an informal challenge I host, and I specifically allow double-dipping on that one. But I am trying my hand at running a formal challenge this year, an Abandoned Book Rescue, and I specify no double-dipping on that one, because next year I want to turn it into a bingo game, sort of like Shaunesay's Award-Winning Science Fiction and Fantasy challenge.

I'm starting to lose track of what other challenges I've signed up for, but I know several of the mystery challenges either specify no double-dipping, or they are structured in such a way that it's a non-issue. Like the chain of evidence one.

But I certainly use the same book for multiple challenges wherever possible. I'd be sunk otherwise!

message 18: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 12 comments Personal opinion; I enjoy the challenge but I don't want it to consumer my entire reading for the year. So I double-dip with some books, to free up time for some others on my tbr list that do not fit a specific category. I still read 70+ books per year so I meet the goal of at least a book a week.
Whatever floats your boat...

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I absolutely "double dip"--I call it playing book bingo. Between work and my community theater commitments, I only read 23 books last year: if I didn't go the book bingo route, I wouldn't have a chance in Hades of fulfilling all the categories. :)

message 20: by Booklover (new)

Booklover | 55 comments I love to double dip, but only with multiple challenges.

message 21: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I personally refuse to double dip. Except the way Booklover refers to it.

For every prompt, 1 book!! I look at these challenges as a way to clean off my backlist. However, I take each challenge separately.

message 22: by Ira_est_a_donum (new)

Ira_est_a_donum | 1 comments I will be double dipping on a few out of mere convenience but approximately 75% of the list I will be trying to do 1 book per prompt. I'm only double dipping because there is no way I will be able to finish the list with all my other interests, goals and obligations for 2017.

message 23: by Louise (new)

Louise White This is my first year of doing this challenge, I always set myself the goodreads challenge to set the amount I will read. However, I work full time and have a blog where I read advanced copies of books so feel that I may have to double dip. The point of me doing this challenge is to expand my reading genres and hopefully clear some of my tbr list.

message 24: by Emanuel (new)

Emanuel | 253 comments one time i tried to fill all prompts with one book - it was difficult but I did it - I think that each one do what want with the prompts. I try with one book fill as many prompts that I can, and if I want to refill a prompt I do it.

message 25: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 73 comments This is my first time doing the challenge, and I'm trying to fulfill each prompt by using a different book for each prompt. I also look at it as a wonderful way to clear off my to-read shelf. I read a lot of new bestsellers, so I leave a lot of the prompts free to fulfill with new books that peak my interest during the year!

message 26: by Sheri (new)

Sheri Lisker The Read Harder not only says you can double dip, it seems to encourage you to do so. And it could be fun to see how many prompts you can cover with one book. The Popsugar does not seem to address this head on and it seems to me how you approach it might depend on how much time you have, whether there are books you want to read that might not fit a challenge and how fast a reader you are. I am a slooooooow reader. So I will double dip on Read Harder and see if I can get through Popsugar in any manner. There was one I signed up for about how many pages you read but I can't find the link so I might have to quit that one.

message 27: by Aimee (new)

Aimee Beske | 24 comments I would love to read one book for each topic, but as an Engish teacher I end up spending more time reading student essays than novels several times a year. This is my first time doing a reading challenge, and I am very excited, but my plan is to count each book that I read for every category it can possibly fit into. I just finished The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, which could actually fit into 10 different categories for me. When each category is full, I will begin reading books to take the place of the titles used in multiple categories. Who knows, maybe by the end I will have read 52 books, but if not, I will at least have expanded my horizons in reading and hopefully read more than I did last year (which was only 25 books).

Whatever path you choose to take - enjoy!!

message 28: by Marilyn (last edited Jan 16, 2017 06:45AM) (new)

Marilyn (marilyn357) | 143 comments I did four challenges in 2016 with NO double dipping. In 2017 I am doing the Popsugar, Around the World, 50 States and 50 Authors, Jane Austen, & Books and Chocolate with NO double dipping. However, I am allowing myself to count any Shakespeare I read against the untimed Shakespeare challenge at NBRC. I am also doing a challenge at our local library and those are ALL books from the other five challenges. I don't feel bad about that because the library was only asking for 12 books, but I am reading several each month instead. They published their challenge quite late so I couldn't plan ahead. IF they had published earlier I would not double dip there.

message 29: by Hanna (new)

Hanna (hannasw) | 9 comments I do double dipping. Last year I managed to read only 17 books and this year I don't have any more time than last year. So if one book fits for more than one prompt, it's going there. I personally don't think it's cheating and won't think myself as a cheater.
Even if I'm double dipping, I'm still going to read more different books than any other year earlier so that's a win for me already.

message 30: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I don't think of it as cheating, Hanna. I won't go there, though. For me the intent is to read a separate book for each. However, I do double dip if you include separate challenges.

But I'm not trying to finish the challenges, my goal is to make my reading more diverse or I'd be reading all cozy mysteries, historical romance, romantic suspense, and true crime.

message 31: by Hanna (new)

Hanna (hannasw) | 9 comments Yeah, that's the goal for me too! I've already picked a lot of books I wouldn't normally read. I mostly read YA fantasy but I tried to pick books from different genres to read in this one!

Yeah, another genre I love YA dystopias.... and I'm in my 5th decade!

That's an excellent idea! I would love to read one book for each prompt, by your strategy works even better - the priority is on expanding horizons and reading something for each prompt; when that is done I can focus on the secondary goal of reading one book for each prompt.

message 34: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 736 comments I double-dip across challenges. This year I have Popsugar, Around the Year, and Read Harder all on my to do lists. I only let each book appear once on each challenge, but it can count for all three challenges if it can (and I definitely try to have it count for all three!).

message 35: by Sharmon (new)

Sharmon (tpgirl) | 68 comments I also don't double dip within one challenge but do across multiple challenges. I belong to four book groups here on Good reads and do a challenge or two from each. I don't get to stressed if I don't finish the challenges .....it was just fun to play along. If a book I read doesn't fit anything..oh well. I did make myself a group here on Goodreads so that I can keep track of my challenges. In my own group I can use the discussion threads to keep track of my books and put links back to the original thread.

message 36: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Goldthorpe-Martens (cozymamma37) | 1 comments I'm doing 9 different reading challenges this year, so using 1 book to complete more than 1 prompt is going to be a regular occurrence for me.

message 37: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Phillips (debbie_phillips) I am new to this challenge. I am starting the challenge hoping to do one book for one prompt, but I know many of them will fill more than one prompt, and I have many books I want to read this year that don't fit the challenge at all. So, I may double dip at the end of the year if I have prompts that I haven't filled yet that can be filled by books already read.

I am penciling them in on a paper copy of the list that I created with lines for me to write on. That way if I need to fill in the prompt at the end of the year, because I haven't had time to read an individual book for that prompt, I will know what books I already read that will fill that prompt.

I also printed a paper copy for me to write suggestions and books I want to read that fill the prompt so that I don't forget. I don't have Internet access at home, only at work, so it is helpful to have the list printed out.

message 38: by Heather (new)

Heather I double-dipped last year, but my goal this year is not to. Totally personal choice

Katie (kater07) | 1 comments Helena wrote: "Can the same book be used to fulfill two requirements?"

According to the 2015 group that was updated with 2017 information,

We tackled Pop Sugar's 2015 and 2016 Ultimate Reading Challenges and now we're preparing for round 3! Some are using the official PopSugar 2017 list, some are finishing up previous lists and some are tackling other lists, all are welcome here.

Modifications to or rules for the challenge are still being developed. We may have to make modifications to some items on the lists for members who don't have an eligible book. Those modifications will be posted here and available for anyone to use.

A handy spreadsheet created by our member Bonnie can be used for tracking. It's available here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/....

Also, for the Pop Sugar list the same book can be used to fulfill a maximum of 3 list items.

One little housekeeping thing for 2017. I removed Amanda from moderator status as she was really too busy with life to moderate and I've tapped Bonnie (she of the amazing spreadsheet) to replace her as I know Bonnie and I know she's a great asset to this group.

In general though you are all great and require very little moderation.

message 40: by Lora (new)

Lora (lorao) | 7 comments We allow double dipping except for the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenges since it is only 12 books...I don't double dip personally but I don't mind other people do.

message 41: by Alicia (new)

Alicia M (aliciajm) | 9 comments I'm doing two challenges (Popsugar and Book Riot's Read Harder) and my personal rule is that, if I have to, I can use the same book twice, once for each challenge. I'm going to read as many different books as possible though, and only do this if I really don't have the time/inclination for some of the categories.

message 42: by Johanna (new)

Johanna Ellwood (jpellwood) | 236 comments I don't double dip. However, this year I'm also trying the challenge (a 2nd time) with my kids under the Children's Literature challenge. I will probably double dip a couple of books on theirs and mine. Right now we're reading Wonder together. I'm definitely putting it on their list and may put it on mine as well.

message 43: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 1 comments When I started the 2015 challenge, I made a spreadsheet, and I mark *each* category that my book covers. This way, I can 'adjust' later if I discover another book that falls into only one category.
I usually read one book while listening to another, but I have yet to complete a whole challenge. On the other hand, I am reading/listening more and have ventured into books that I would never have looked at without the help of our small facebook group.
