May Challenge
READ: 10/10
✔1. May Day, the first of May is celebrated around the world. It has a number of meanings. In many other countries it is a celebration of spring and the coming of summer. It is celebrated with many spring flowers, many of them blooming right in your own backyard. To communist and socialist countries, it is a celebration for the workers.
Read a book that takes place in spring or with a flower/s on the cover.
A Rose from the Dead - Kate Collins 5/17
✔2. On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified defeat of a European colonial power, and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo. Today, this holiday is celebrated by Mexicans, and especially the Hispanic community in the U.S. It is a time of song, dance, partying, and in general a time to be proud to be of Hispanic descent.
Read a book with a celebration or a book set in Mexico.
White Heat - Jill Shalvis 5/2
✔3. International No Diet Day encourages us to appreciate the bodies we have. You could consider it a "Big" backlash against becoming little (err thin) people. This day is intended for us to appreciate the body we have. It encourages us to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes....... and that's okay.
Read a book with more than one paranormal species or a book with a (skinny) chick on the cover.
Oracle's Moon - Thea Harrison (oracle/psychic and a djinn) 5/16
✔4. It's time to get out your sandals and flip flops. For today is No Socks Day. Go ahead..... free your toes of the confines of socks and stockings. Give those toes of yours a breath of fresh air. The creators of this day also profess that No Socks Day will reduce your laundry load, and therefore, is healthy for the environment.
Read a book with a vampire that does not sleep in a coffin or with a hot guy on the cover.
The Chieftain - Margaret Mallory 5/24
✔5. Clean Up Your Room Day is a day parents eagerly await........... and kids dread!
If you've got kids, it is very possible that their rooms are a vast wasteland, completely filled with "good stuff". "Messy" is too kind of an adjective to describe the conditions. Its impossible to walk through the room. Every dresser and shelf (and under the bed), is packed with everything imaginable. Dust has been piling up as long as your child has been around. Comfy, cozy, and quite livable to the child, its an everyday source of frustration for the "folks".
Read a book that has been on your TBR pile for a couple months.
Changeling - Yasmine Galenorn (added Feb 2009) 5/11
✔6. Twilight Zone Day is mysterious, weird, surreal and perhaps a little scary. We can think of many other adjectives, but I think you get the picture. Every once in a while, you have a day like this. And, today is designed to be that day.
Read a book that you think is a little scary or a book with a dark cover.
Seizure - Kathy Reichs 5/25
✔7. No Dirty Dishes Day is a reprieve from the daily pile of dishes to wash and dry. Day after day, we do the daily chore of washing and drying dishes, then put them away in various cabinets and drawers. We perform this task after each and every meal, and often after snacks. Even putting them in and out of the dishwasher and running it, can be a chore. You deserve a break from this routine. And, today is that day. The objective of this day is to have no dirty dishes. It is not intended to pile them up until tomorrow.
I would like to say....don't buy a book today, but we all know, I would fail. Read a book in which someone has to do a task or a book with a white cover.
Shadow's Seduction - Kresley Cole 5/18
✔8. This is a great day! It's World Goth Day. As it should be, everyone who is into the Goth sub-culture, now has a day to celebrate who they are. Go out and embrace your inner and your outer Goth today. Read a book with a vampire or a Steampunk book.
Night Unbound - Dianne Duvall 5/20
✔9. It's National Tap Dance Day. Today is a great day to dance the night away.... and the daytime, too! This day was created in honor of the birthday of legendary tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson on May 25, 1878. I think I'll wear my tap shoes today!
Read a book that you think is fun or a book with a fun cover.
Red Velvet Cupcake Murder - Joanne Fluke 5/9
✔10. Today is Pack Rat Day. C'mon, admit it... .. you're a Pack Rat like the rest of us. If you are a Pack Rat, you're in good company. You might as well come out of hiding behind those piles of valuable "stuff", and celebrate this fun day. Its really easy to let things pile up. After all, each item you acquire along the road of life may have value or serve some meaningful purpose. 'Ya just never know. Making the decision to discard something of even remotely questionable value, is difficult, if not impossible to do. We understand you perfectly. Why? Because most of us are pack rats. Read a book with a pack or a book with an animal on the cover.
One Lucky Cowboy - Carolyn Brown 5/28

Beltaine Challenge
READ: 6/6
✔1. Its name appears to derive from the Old Irish words Bel taine meaning ‘bright fire’. Bonfires played an important part in the activities and were often lit on prominent local landmarks.
Read a book with a character with fire magic, or with fire/red/orange on the cover, or where there is a fire.
The Madness of Mercury - Connie Di Marco 5/18

✔2. Witches and the fairies were also believed to be unusually active during this period and a number of actions could be taken to protect your home and especially your livestock. Milk could be poured across the threshold of the house or byre to prevent entry by the ‘wee folk’ or more gruesomely the cattle could be driven to the nearest ringfort or “fairyfort” and some of their blood spilt on the ground to appease the spirits.
Read a book with a witch/wizard, or a book with fae characters, or where a character performs a ritual of some form (ritual is open to your own interpretation).
Changeling - Yasmine Galenorn (m.c. is half human/half fae) 5/11

✔3. May flowers, such as primrose, gorse or hawthorn blossoms, were gathered before dawn and placed in bundles on door posts to ward off evil. Similarly sprigs of rowan or hawthorn could be placed over the byre door or even across the horns of the cows to prevent ‘milk thieves’, the prevalent belief being that someone could steal your summer’s milk supplies through the incantation of specific curses.
Read a book with flowers on the cover, or a cover you think is pretty, or where a character casts a curse.
A Rose from the Dead - Kate Collins 5/17

✔4. ‘May bushes’were also erected in farm yards and around villages. These normally consisted of hawthorn branches that had been driven into the ground and then decorated with rags and other items.
Read a book where someone decorates, or where the characters live in or visit a village, or with trees or foliage on the cover.
The Ronin's Mistress - Laura Joh Rowland 5/27

✔5. Some traditions also surrounded human fertility, such as the creation of May babies. In this curious custom a figure of a female (the May baby) was placed on a pole and then covered in flowers, ribbons and straw. A man and a woman, also dressed up in costume, would then dance around the figure and make vulgar displays to the on watching crowd. It was believed that attending this spectacle would help people trying to conceive.
Read a book where someone gets laid, or has kids/is pregnant, or where characters attend an event.
Seduced by the Storm - Sydney Croft 5/9

✔6. Beltane celebrations had largely died out by the mid-20th century, although some of its customs continued and in some places it has been revived as a cultural event. Since the late 20th century, Celtic neopagans and Wiccans have observed Beltane, or something based on it, as a religious holiday. Neopagans in the Southern Hemisphere often celebrate Beltane at the other end of the year (around 1 November).
Read a book set in summer or winter, or set/published in the 20th century, or with a title/character name that begins with any letter in BELTAINE.
Night Unbound - Dianne Duvall 5/20

June Challenge
READ: 11/10
✔1: June is Gay Pride Month.
Read a book with an LGBTQ character or with any colour from the rainbow on the cover (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet.)
Lucky Bastard - Deborah Coonts (yellow and red) 6/7

✔2: June is also Aquarium Month, National Accordion Awareness Month, National Adopt a Cat Month, and Rose Month. Choose one of the following....
✯ A book with flowers on the cover.
Starting Now - Debbie Macomber 6/12

✔3: JUNE 1ST: HEIMLICH MANEUVER DAY
Named after the doctor who invented it, the Heimlich manoeuvre has seriously curbed the hazards of choking since its introduction in the 1970s.
Read a book with a character in a medical profession or published during or after the 1970's.
Bad Monkey - Carl Hiaasen (m.c.'s girlfriend is a medical examiner) 6/30

✔4: JUNE 7TH: NATIONAL DONUT DAY
Believe it or not, the Salvation Army is behind the creation of this sweet holiday. According to their website, “the first National Donut Day was celebrated in Chicago in 1938 to help raise needed funds during the Great Depression and commemorate the work of the 'donut lassies' who helped make the donut what it is today by feeding the tasty confection to American soldiers during WWI.” In modern times, companies like Entenmann’s are donating a portion of their donut profits to the Salvation Army while Dunkin' Donuts is donating calories to your waistline.
Read a book set in Chicago, or with a soldier, or where a character eats a tasty treat.
The Chocolate Mouse Trap - JoAnna Carl 6/24
(heroine works in a chocolate shop and eats 2-3 bonbons per day)

✔5: JUNE 8TH: NAME YOUR POISON DAY
Although this holiday is widely open to interpretation, we recommend no one take it literally. Instead, muster up the courage to boldly acknowledge the one vice in your life that you simply cannot resist no matter how terrible it may be for you. Unless said “poison” happens to be arsenic.
Read a book where a character is poisoned, or where alcohol is consumed, or where a character has a vice.
The Valcourt Heiress - Catherine Coulter 6/18

✔6: JUNE 16TH: BLOOMSDAY
In case you're not a James Joyce aficionado, June 16 is the day the events in Ulysses take place. The name comes from Leopold Bloom, the main character in the novel.
Read a book some people find confusing, or over 400 pages long, or that begins with any letter in Ulysses.
Two Graves - Douglas Preston (484 pages) 6/24

✔7: JUNE 17TH: NATIONAL EAT YOUR VEGETABLE'S DAY
We are unsure whether PETA or the PTA is more responsible for this holiday, but you better be prepared to finish those Brussels sprouts today if you know what’s good for you! Like Brussels sprouts, for example. They’re a great source of dietary fibre and vitamin C.
Read a book with food on the cover, or where the characters eat vegetables, or with a colourful cover. You can skip this one if anyone can get Dee to eat a veggie ;)
The Order of Odd-Fish - James Kennedy 6/5

✔8: JUNE 21ST: SUMMER SOLSTICE
Pencil in some sun on your calendar today, because the top half of the Earth is getting all up in our star’s grill. Welcome to summer, Northern Hemisphere.
Read a book set in a sunny place, or with a bright cover, or that makes you smile.
Melting into You - Tracey Alvarez 6/30

✔9: JUNE 24TH: INTERNATIONAL FAIRY DAY
A relatively young holiday for a relatively old mythical creature, International Fairy Day was created by artist Jessica Galbreth for “believers, collectors, and the young at heart to celebrate all that is Fae and reconnect with their imagination and child-like wonder.”
Read a book with fairies, or a book you find magical, or set in a forest.>
Down the Rabbit Hole - J.D. Robb 6/10

✔10: JUNE 25TH: COLOR TV DAY
While everyone is declaring the end of traditional television as we know it, take a moment today to reflect on the advent of color TV in our lives. Then marvel at the fact that it has only been 62 years since the first color television broadcast ever. On June 25th, 1951, CBS aired a variety show that was only available on color-ready TV’s. According to Geek Book of Days, black and white TVs missed the party entirely, not technologically savvy enough to even receive the show.
Read a book where characters watch TV, or with the letters CBS anywhere in the title, or that you'd rather read instead of watching TV.
An English Bride In Scotland - Lynsay Sands 6/19

✔11 - BONUS BOOK:
Read anything you want! You can use this option to reach your goal if you're finding it difficult to get a book to suit the other tasks.
