SewingandCaring (washyourhands) Been a while since someone posted in this section and it was looking lonely.

Was lucky enough to get said mits on every current kindle device in real life today.

Basic Kindle (8th gen) it's the old kindle touch. For all the talk about dpi and contrast there was no discernible difference between this and the more expensive models with the light off. Smaller amount of storage and slightly slower page turning. Bargain, all you need is a lamp.

Paperwhite (3rd gen). Yay they fixed the screen, no shadows, and it's white and crisp and even. more storage than the first gen. Worth the upgrade if you want to spend the pennies on luxuries like lighting and storage.

Voyage. Lovely, screen and lighting a small improvement over the PW, especially the adaptive lighting. Dead flat screen. The case working as a stand is great. In the case it's much smaller and lighter than a PW in a case. The side buttons take a bit of getting used to - if you don't like them then return it for a PW.

Oasis. Oh dear. The three we looked at had buggered up screens. Bright one side, patchy. As a device it's lovely, nice to hold, physical buttons. However absolutely categorically not worth £100 over the voyage. You are paying that money for different buttons and a case, it's identical in every other respect. It's not even that much thinner with the case on. Another point is that it's the same price as 2 PW, a basic kindle and a lamp. Quality control is shocking and it's not worth the risk until they fix it.

I'll post about the fires next.

I didn't even know there was such a thing as an oasis!

Gotta say I love my voyage. It's the best of all the kindles I've owned. And I've had all save the oasis.
I don't have the official case on my voyage. I bought a nice flip cover for it. The stand covers look like they'd be horrid.
I can dig up the link for the cover I've got if anyone wants a shufty.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I've only had one kindle. Am I deprived? Still goes, slightly cracked and a little reluctant to connect to wifi.

Is that you or the Kindle?

Me too, mine is 5, I'd love a paperwhite but can't justify it till this one breaks

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Probably both of us GL!

SewingandCaring (washyourhands) I have a voyage myself and the cover works well if you never intend to put it in a handbag - whole thing is magnetic. Amazon do a great basics padded and zipped slip cover for around a tenner which will fit the kindles and 7 inch fire if you want to future proof your cover.

Onwards to the tablet review...

SewingandCaring (washyourhands) The release dates for the fires make no sense at first glance. What happened was that they discontinued the premium models and started releasing budget versions with less fetures.

Fire HD 7. Basic cheap kindle, can sometimes be found in offer, Black Friday it was £30. The screen resolution is bad but usable. There is only one speaker *but* if you want to use Bluetooth or headphones for audiobooks then there is not a lick of difference between this and the top of the range model. Has a SD card slot so you can fit almost unlimited music on it.

Fire HD 8. Very slim, the resolution is poor but very noticeably better than the HD 7. Stereo speakers. The size makes finding cases limiting.

Fire HD 10 same as above but bigger and the poor resolution becomes unacceptable for a tablet at this price point.

Fire kids edition. Takes the piss. It's a HD 7 in a case you can buy seperatly for £10 third party. So that's £100 for £60 worth of kit and the word "kids"

Now we are on to the good ones.

Fire HDX 7. Discontinued but you can pick them up on Amazon second hand and refurbished for less than the HD 8. Stereo speakers which pump out more volume than the iPads. Fantastic resolution but it has a thing with a green light. It makes the screen look very strange but it stops eye strain and works well.

Fire HDX 8.9. The daddy. This is available for the same price as the HD 10 used but has better everything. Resolution is better than the iPad's retina screen. No green reading light though. It has this thing with the official case where it directs the sound forward at you.

The above are not better than a iPad mini/iPad Air full price.

Now. Word of warning:
The bad; with the HDX range if you get one with 3G, because the 3G offer is no longer available via Amazon something got broke and you can't regester the tablet unless you call and get them to manually register it. Phone lady/gent will need to have your serial number and the code off the SIM card - they will tell you how to find that on the device as it's in the secret settings.
The good; people keep thinking the 3G version is broken and returning them. One is up now at £250 off. For one phone call.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments This is the cover I've got. The colour is much nicer than in the link.
I paid a lot more than that too!

SewingandCaring (washyourhands) That's the great thing about the HD7, it's *incredibly* cheap for what you get. If you compare the HDX screens with the 7's, and I'll screenshot them both for the thread tomorrow, you can see where the money has been saved in making it. Of course if you are not a resolution nerd (As I am) and the speakers makes no difference to you then there is literally no point to getting the more expensive versions, especially since the HD 7 comes with a SD card slot.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments So which would be the cheapest cheerful version with SD?

Dave keeps saying he'd like a tablet he could take on our travels that he could view his photos on.

Link please?

SewingandCaring (washyourhands) The kindle HD 7 without doubt. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

He can get away with the 8GB version as takes microSD cards up to 64GB and you can store photos and your own music on them, the 8GB on the fire itself is for books, Amazon's prime content such as videos and prime music, and audible books.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) This is the case I got for my Fire HD8 - it does the job well and looks good.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ah. Micro SD.

That's not what his camera uses, I'm sure.

SewingandCaring (washyourhands) He may be lucky, some cameras allow this some don't: microSD to SD converters cost around a pound and a cheap 8GB microSD card is about £4 if he wants to see if it works in his camera. https://www.amazon.co.uk/MICRO-SD-CAR...

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I don't think there are any tablets now that have a full size SD card slot. You could use a micro usb SD card reader though?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments I got the 8gb version and paid for a memory card as it was cheaper. I mainly play games on mine (currently typing on the phone with the tablet in front of me)
