Flashback to shortly before Xanther's birthday--she's 11 going on 12--with Dov who takes her to a sewage treatment plant. Man giving the tour was one of Dov's soldiers in the military.
Xanther is thinking about anger and fear and the lies of her sisters. Thinks about how they tell "Les Parents" that they're having good dreams when Xanther hears them whimpering and crying in their sleep. Xanther thinks more about the Xiomara lie and considers rage; wonders if she got the temper from Dov--a side of him she'd never seen but glimpses of, but heard about. The "eyes" in the forest are Xanther "flicking stones in her head," looking for the "summoning, reddish glow."
Xanther goes to Kle's house to play video games with friends where they toss out a bunch of names for Xanther's cat. Josh says (to a vegetarian Xanther) that the cat has to eat meat--"Something has to die in order for it to live." She flicks through a copy of Lone Wolf and Cub picking out names. Flashback: Xanther suddenly remembers waking up in the middle of the night to find the kitten sleeping with Mefisto.
While playing games, Xanther's mind wanders back to "flipping stones" which makes her start burning hot inside with seizure-like reaction. Xanther starts seeing bloody visions and black. She snaps out of it and starts playing at game (and is performing super well at it) like nothing happened. She's playing. Feeling good. Xanther doesn't tell Anwar and neither do her friends. She claims it was nothing and that had it been a seizure, she would be responsive.
