Regina Lindsey | 1005 comments I'm reading my first Netgalley book and it is atrocious. I'm about 3/4 finished and feel like I can do a fair and full review on it because it is non-fiction and the quality of the book isn't contingent on wrapping a story up.

Is there an expectation that we finish the entire book if we can fulfill our commitment to a fair and honest review?

Jen | 1545 comments I've never not finished a book but I do think that is acceptable to post a review for a book you simply couldn't finish because it was so bad. I think as long as you provide constructive feedback about the issues that bothered you, the publisher will be fine with it. Honestly I believe that net galley tracks whether the feedback is submitted and not whether you finished the book

However, if it's a publisher who's books you read frequently, I would try to be as diplomatic as possible about your review. They don't expect us to like every book and they appreciate candid feedback but you may need to be careful with your wording to make sure they approve you for others in the future.

I will say that i've given books some bad reviews and received thank you notes from publishers.

Thanks for the feedback. I will definitely be diplomatic because the book could have been better for me and I'd like to be constructive. It is a subject I care about tremendously and applaud the effort.

Jen | 1545 comments Sorry for typos above (writing from my phone). I think the publisher will appreciate your feedback then so I wouldn't worry about not finishing it.

Regina Lindsey | 1005 comments I'm the last person to criticize typos. Fat fingers, age, auto-correct, and always in a hurry often creates embarrassing posts. Ha

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I agree with Jen, I haven't read a netgalley book in a while, but If I recall when you input your review there is also a spot for your regular "thoughts" then a section that can go directly to the publisher/author- I might consider in your case writing about your reading experience there so it doesn't come up in the regular "review" but your thoughts will still be heard.

Nicole D. | 1573 comments I have posted reviews of books I haven't finished. If you can't finish a book, people need to know

Regina Lindsey | 1005 comments Thanks.

Ooops. I just realized I posted in wrong place. Sorry

LibraryCin | 11684 comments Regina, I assume you meant to post in the Footnotes folder, so I've moved it there for you. Please let me know if that's not where you meant for it to be!

That was my intention. Thanks! Sorry to have created more work for you.

LibraryCin | 11684 comments No worries! I've actually not moved a thread before, but I know Anita and/or Nicole have, so I wanted to figure out how, anyway. :-)
