I thought this was a very interesting book - very different from sci-if that I am used to reading. It was definitely much more scientific, with lots of talks about protons and dimensions and physics and such, which was good on one hand because it made everything feel more legit, but also completely lost me during the more long winded explanations.

I really liked the use of the three body problem and the idea of feuding agencies among the people who contacted the aliens and thinking about whether they should come to earth or not. It was more original than just have an alien race attack and all that, because there was a good (to them, at least) justification for it and such.

I wish there had been more focus on the characters. My favorite characters were Ye and Shi because I felt like they had at least a little depth to them, but the others didn't really have any development or anything like that. I also wish they had made some of the information about what was going on a bit clearer, because it got confusing at times. Granted, this book was clearly mostly a setup for the next two books, so hopefully things will clear up later on.

So now that I've read the whole setup, I clearly need to read the sequel at some point!

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments I like sci-fi and this book really never beeped on my radar. Hard to believe since it won the Hugo in 2015. Checking the reviews/ratings on PBT, I see that it's been rated 4 and 5 stars by two other members of this group.

Anyhow, I've added it to the TBR.

Sushicat | 843 comments I've read the whole trilogy last year (well, actually listened to it) and very much enjoyed it.
