I had limited success in school track. When I started bench pressing seriously, the results were... beyond what I could have hoped for.
My best section is Ooops, when everything goes wrong!

Debbie Jinks (debbiejay) | 5 comments Hi, I’m a UK girl and have been writing for approximately two years. I also love to sing and did that as a profession for 15 years. However even though I still enjoy singing now my real passion in life is writing.
After suffering a head injury, which caused me to lose my sense of smell and taste, (Anosmia), writing became a way of venting my frustration and anger from this life changing condition. It became a way of escaping form the reality of it too.
Istarted to love writing especially when I discovered how much satisfaction I got from it. This led me to the realisation that I wanted to become a writer so now have almost finished writing a short storybook of prose, still at the illustration stage. I have also started on my first novel in the fantasy genre, and have just completed a fantasy writing diploma. Not surprisingly in that case, I have an obsession with dragons and collect dragon paraphernalia. I’m also planning on having a dragon tattoo to cover up my old tatty faded one!
I enjoy horse riding and growing chilli peppers, the hotter the better! I also try to practice mindfulness when I can sit still for long enough!
I hope to gain more experience and knowledge on writing and engage with like minded people. P.S. I hope this wasn't too long!

Richard Roux | 13 comments Hello! My name is Richard Roux. I'm a teacher, adjunct professor, historian, and writer. I'd love to make connections with other writers and readers. I have one non-fiction book that is a microhistory of Prohibition, and the first book in a historical fiction / Western series centered around the California Gold Rush.

William Morgenstein (httpswwwthecrazylifeofbillcom) | 53 comments My folks told me about prohibition and how they would actually knock on that sliding wooden window to be recognized. Although the Twenties were a time of prejudice they made friends of all types, countries, religions and shades. These friends remained for years. Whether it was the liquor or just the rebellious feeling at the time that did this they didn't know but they surely enjoyed the camaraderie.

I used to go to Frankie and Johnny's in Manhattan. It was up a rickety flight of stairs and had a little window cut through the door. The legend was the restaurant was a speakeasy in the 20's and a hot spot for hooch.
I loved that place- the steaks were unbelievable. The waiters were ancient and told you how you were going to eat your steak. lol.

The 1920s really were an interesting time in American History, with political, cultural, and economic changes. From my research, violators of Prohibition were from across the spectrum.

Yeah, I associate Prohibition in the West with an earlier time period- like in the late 1880. I always link the Prohibition of the 20's with Chicago and New York.

That tends to be a reflection of popular culture. Shoot, look at all of the movies about Prohibition and gangsterism...they mostly revolve around NY and Chicago. The WCTU was alive and active out in the Far West in the late 19th century. Where I'm from (Bakersfield, CA), was still the "Wild West" in the 1920s. We were often referred to as a "wide open town" where anything goes. Many opportunists broke Prohibition laws responding to supply and demand.

It was still the Wild West in the 1970's hahah. I think Bakersfield has a lot of musicians? Like garage band types?

I love the In n' Out over there. It's our favorite pit stop on the way to LA. Are you near the outlets?

message 286: by Richard (new)

Richard Roux | 13 comments Actually, we are quite famous for the Bakersfield Sound--Nashville West is what it is sometimes called. Buck Owens and Merle Haggard developed their twangy country/western sound here. And we are also the home of Korn.

The Tejon Outlets (almost at the base of the Grapevine) are about 30 minutes or so south of where I live. I'm closer to the eastern side of the valley.

message 287: by Carole (new)

Carole P. Roman | 1253 comments Mod
Right, I had heard of the Bakersfield Sound. I remember that about Korn.

I just know the area around the shopping center. It's our halfway point (Vegas- LA) where we meet up and eat, get gas.

A great place and ow about those hash brown potatoes. We once watched from the window as 2 kids popped our trunk across the street, took out a set off golf clubs and ran down 48th St.,never to be seen again. Nothing we could do so we just finished our steaks. P.S. It was a speakeasy in the 20's

I love the hash browns there! OMG the room was always so hot- but I didn't care, the steak was delicious. Every time we ate there, I ran into someone I knew.
They've moved. I'm not sure where they are anymore. I took my dad on a special date there once. We saw Camelot with Robert Goulet afterwards.

Dennis Meredith (dennismeredith) | 189 comments Carole and Richard,
Thanks for sharing. We recently moved from the Blue Ridge parkway in NC (very rural area in the deciduous rain forest) to San Diego County. We love it here and get to Vegas about once a month for a show. We drive because it less time than flying! We are always looking for a place to stop and it is usually at Peggy's Sue 50's diner. We will definitely stop at the In n' Out in Bakersfield. Last show, Lady Gaga, next show Steve Martin and Martin Short.

You are so right about the driving. We've been doing that commute for years. It was easier than going through the airport. Beside, we love the scenery- the desert is so different from New York. Death Valley is like a moonscape.
Now, all our friends are doing the same thing. Driving is less of a hassle.

I love Peggy Sue's. We also eat at the Mad Greek's Diner. For breakfast we drive to Jean and have the Buffet at Whiskey Pete. It's so bad, it's good.

The kids love Hash House for comfort food. There is one on the strip near Harrah's, but we bring in Hash House takeout from the M Resort at the edge of town.

I love the shows in Vegas. They are actually a little shorter in length than a New York show. Celine Dion's show was just about the best one I've ever seen- I went for my mom- I'm not even a fan of hers. She was unbelievable.

Justine Ryder | 1 comments Hello Everyone!

I'm Justine Ryder, novice author in erotic fiction with ZERO credentials - haha!

But I just published on Amazon Swing Cruise Odyssey Book I: Genesis.

And I think it's pretty good.

So do my friends - but that's to be expected!

So I'm here in a forum - nbever ever done this before - looking for advice on sales and mktg my book, making friends, checking out the subculture and having a cup of coffee with Baileys in it.

So I have twitter accounts, facebook accounts and a wb page for the book...and I'm beginning to understand that prmotion and interaction is critical to getting ANYWHERE.

So I'm wondering for example, how to REVIEW a book in Goodreads, and perhaps mine reviewed in turn?

Sounds basic, sure, but when I open GoodReads I feel like Ive just stepped into the cockpit of a 747 - I am truly not tech!

So that's it methinks!

Looking fwd to chatting with people!

Justine Ryder

Hi Justine,
Visit the different threads, make friends and many of us review each other eventually.

We also name places to get reviews, share our blogs and other resources. There is a lot of proactive stuff going on. Graeme mentioned a few good ones.

Welcome to our group.
