My reading list is so huge now, I will not live long enough to read all of the books there, but it does not stop me from adding titles. I love it when a challenge makes me go out of my way to discover a new author or genre that I have not read before. It is one of the things that has kept me in this group for so many years.

How nice. I don't know what Condensed Books were. Installments in the Readers Digest?

message 77: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments They are abridged books - they are shortened to make them easier to read. Supposedly the essence of the story isn't sacrificed.

From Wikipedia, "Most volumes contained five (although a considerable minority consisted of three, four, or six) current best-selling novels and nonfiction books which were abridged (or "condensed") specifically for Reader's Digest."

The volumes are all listed on the Wikipedia page and Haunting of Hill House was published in 1960, Volume 41.

Very interesting Janice. I would love to get my hands on one of these old books. I'm just wondering though how horror would come off in an abridged version, given that Haunting of Hill House is already a small book. Were you creeped out back then?
