Reading the chapter “Buy Local,” has some really inspiring and eye-opening reasons for shopping in local stores. In particular, I was really surprised by the study that showed if residents spend 10 per cent more of their money at local stores, it generates $500 million extra revenue for their cities (p. 47).

Like the author, I am often lured by the cheapness of online and chain stores. However, having read this chapter, I am now motivated to have what the author calls a “big box detox.”

Has the book inspired you to shop in local, independent stores?

(After reading this chapter, I made a point of going to the nearby chocolate store to buy some Valentine's chocolate. It has definitely inspired me!)

Heidi Madden | 118 comments I had a similar reaction. I definitely am drawn to big box stores for my purchases because of the illusion of "cheap." Can I throw a question out there? What are your favourite local places to shop in the Niagara region? I've only been here about a year and a half but my top spots so far are:
- the St Catharines Farmers Market
- the Write Bookshop, St. Catharines
- Beechwood Doughnuts, St. Catharines

Anywhere else I should check out?

Valerie Kane | 17 comments This chapter is definitely a good reminder. I was particularly motivated by the ripple affect it can have on the community with jobs and how box stores tend to ship everything back to head office (wherever that might be) to be done.

Heidi ... Big Reds in Thorold is a great deli/grocery, if you haven't had a chance to check it out yet. We love Beechwood Doughnuts :)

Thanks for asking that question Heidi. I was hoping someone would bring it up! We should definitely celebrate our favourite local businesses. My own personal faves are:

-Chocolates Etc. (the one I mentioned above). Like being in a European cafe, and the owners are fabulous
- Oasis in Port Dalhousie. They make the best falafels in the city.
- The Boot Shop - Fun and unique shoes
- Gwen's Teas - Love all the tea selections and fun tea accessories

Judy | 4 comments Wow, $500 million extra for our community is huge. I would never have guessed.

Well, I suppose I could shop online sites only run from our local shops. Then still get convenience when needed AND benefit our community.

That sounds like a great idea, Judy! As a bonus, you wouldn't have to pay as much for shipping. Some shops may offer a buy online, pick up at the store option so you can go in and out quickly.
