The author is Pat Barker. I read this book and thought it was okay. So I started reading thr sequel-- all of 25 pages and quit reading it. For me, not finishing a book is a big deal--I really didn't like it.

Wend (wends) | 99 comments I read the trilogy many years ago and loved them. Haven't read any Pat Barker since.

The original books by Siegfried Sassoon are much better. Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, Siegfried's Journey 1916-1920, Memoirs of an Infantry Officer are worth while reading, and he writes so well.
If I am not mistaken, they are also on the Guardian List.

Perhaps I would have enjoyed the books more if I hadn't read the Sassoon books first. As I said, he writes, and was one of the few War Poets to survive World War One. So many of them, from all countries, died in that horrible war.

Dawn (eternalalien71) | 43 comments I've just finished this and I'm a little unsure about it.
I always really enjoy fictionalised accounts of real people's lives, so I particulary enjoyed the friendship between Sassoon & Owen.
But they seemed such small characters in the book compared to others. And everyone's separate stories didn't seem to me to fully gell together. Especially Dr Yealland, who just seemed to have been thrown into the mix, perhaps to shock.
Overall though, I did enjoy the book, and I'm glad I read it.

I read it years ago and was glad I read it.
I could not get into the sequel and quit after the first chapter.

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) I like Pat Barker's writing craft, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of story here. I'm about 2/3s through--maybe the trilogy needs to be evaluated all of a piece.
