Nearly 13 years ago I wrote How Will I Talk to Abuela? At the time, writing short personal narratives was simply a creative outlet. Some old memories shimmered like pieces of a mosaic waiting to be assembled into a fuller picture. The story about David and Abuela (grandmother) is based on my mother’s interactions with her biracial grandchildren. When I wrote it, my plans were to share it with my familia.
