Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Oh no, I'm not abandoning the book for sure. I might use the stillness of the night to compose some songs dedicated to the culture of Arbonne.

*is still disappointed that Arbonne is a place and not a woman*

message 52: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Hahahaha Sumit :P :P

@Manu - then why are you torturing these poor souls with Arbonne as a starter :P :P

message 53: by Em Lost In Books (last edited Jun 26, 2014 01:23AM) (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) @Vidya, don't blame me. they VOLUNTEERED:P:P:P

message 54: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments NO! I am asking you to do this very important thing for me.

And that is, drumroll please, ASK ME FOR UPDATES! :D

I've finally found some interest in this book and have read 4 chapters in the last 12 hours.

And now, I rely on you to threaten me to finish it and that too before July. Can you please do that? ^_^

message 55: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) I have read 6 chapters in the last.... 12 days... :D

message 56: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) @Jins: Oh, sure:):)

whats the updates Jins? what you read in these 4 chapters and what you like about them? Characters? Again GGK's writing??

message 57: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Okay you two can tell me what you DIDN'T liked about the book so far??

message 58: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Tsk tsk.. nadaan bacche.. You should have been intelligent like me and started with Lions... Manju is always right.. Don't you two know that... :P :P

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Srividya wrote: "Tsk tsk.. nadaan bacche.. You should have been intelligent like me and started with Lions... Manju is always right.. Don't you two know that... :P :P"

thanks Vidya :) I always have everyone's best at heart :):)

message 60: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments I read that part where 'someone' got shot at and the identity of the shooter was found. It interested me quite a bit.

And GGK does have a very refined sort of writing. It goes over your head and even then you keep marvelling at the words. :P

Um the problem is... I'm only in chapter 8. .___. *runs for cover*

message 61: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Jins Madam, are you typing an essay like Vidya? :P:P

message 62: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) I like the detail and dislike it too. GGK's visuals are complex and detailed, which makes them much more real. However, the downside is that noisy/distracting conditions aren't great for reading this book.

Also, reading around bedtime doesn't work for this one. I need to be fully alert to read and appreciate his work. So, hopefully the weekend will bring some respite. :)

message 63: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments What I didn't like. Um.. It can get confusing at times. Lots of details that seem unnecessary and too many characters. Getting into each person's mind can get a little tedious and in the next chapter you have to remember that it's another person narrating the story.

Also, haven't been getting a lot of time to read peacefully. Sorry Manju. :(

Sounds a lot like 'Sorry Shaktimaan' :P

message 65: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Sumit, I don't get the Shaktiman references. Don't really remember that show much. *hopes Sumit will not call her a bachha or worse shout blasphemy* ;_;

take your time Jins. its not good if you read it in a hurry or without attention, it definitely will go above head.

yeah but the part you're referring to is great and from that point onward story takes some great twist and turns :)

message 67: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) @Jins, you've having problem switching between different POVs??

message 68: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Manju, I'm VERY interested now. I will have to finish this before July. Start threatening me already! :P

True, GGK's work demands your undivided attention :)

How about the characters? & the portrayal of women?

message 70: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Manju wrote: "@Jins, you've having problem switching between different POVs??"

I was having that problem. Now, not as much.

I quite like the way women are portrayed here. Don't like how the men react to it by the way. What's the problem if women show a little authority?

message 71: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) I like the character development. However, I'm presuming that the women aren't just eye candy and will go on to play more important roles later.

message 72: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Sumit, which chapter are you in?

message 73: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) I'm only on chapter II. :(

Was kidding earlier about having finished a lot of chapters. But, this weekend, this book will be my top priority.

message 74: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Switching between POVs can be a little difficult for the first time GGK readers but once you get over it is beautiful. specially the way he describe how his characters think.

I felt the same way about how Gorhaut's people treat women. but then I think how they treat women in our own country.

message 75: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Sumit wrote: "I like the character development. However, I'm presuming that the women aren't just eye candy and will go on to play more important roles later."

Not only this book Sumit but in every other book too, women are not eye candy. They play vital and important roles. they are simple yet so strong.

& thats one of the reason that I like him so much

message 76: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) @Jins, come here and update your thoughts after finishing each chapter and we'll discuss them. Hope that will motivate Sumit to read this book :)

message 77: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Oh thank God. Sumit is behind me. Rejoice! :P

Yes Manju, he does describe that beautifully. :)

And it's true. I was likening that situation with our country's treatment towards women as well. Very saddening. The only plus is that it's not as bad as described in the book about Gorhaut. But that isn't something to be happy about. :(

true, may be people are more educated these days that treatment of women is not as gruesome as it used to be.

but please come with every chapter update.

Vidya you can read this but please first finish Lions :D:D

message 81: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Manju wrote: "@Jins, come here and update your thoughts after finishing each chapter and we'll discuss them. Hope that will motivate Sumit to read this book :)"

I'm motivated already, Manju. Just that I need a bit of time and peace to do justice to GGK's imagination.

But yes, I like books with strong female protagonists, especially if they brave a few odds to demand their rightful places in society.

message 82: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @Manu - Lions first then Tigana and only then will I read Arbonne.. :D :D

message 83: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Alright Manju. You keep threatening me. I am determined to finish it by this month. But you must ask for updates the moment you see me so I stop GRing and go read. :P

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) @Shin: how many chapter you read yesterday?

message 88: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Only 1. I'm ashamed. ;_;

But I'm reading now. Will try to complete 2 chapters today at least. :)

its okay. you're reading thats what makes me happy :)

so what was in that chapter?

Oh I think it was about the meeting of Blaise, Arriane, Signe and Bertran meeting if I'm right?

message 90: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Yes the very same. And the Midsummer traditions.

Now, I'm in the Autumn part of the book. :) With Rosala and Galbert de Garsenc having a fight.

This Galbert person is evil. I don't like him. >:(

message 91: by Em Lost In Books (last edited Jun 27, 2014 02:07AM) (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Oh that part is great too and one of the most vital event of the book.

I like Rosala very much after this. Living among these women haters she has tremendous courage to stand in front of Galbert. As much as I love Rosala, I hate her husband with equal contempt.

Same here but he is an important character as he is the very root of evil. His hatred for women and people who treat women respectfully makes me want to kill him myself.

message 92: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Yes, Rosala really seems very sane and courageous at the same time. Living in Gorhaut and still having a voice of her own, it's commendable.

I'd like to know what he does in the future but he really is vile. Taking pleasure in injuring a woman who is expecting, threatening to take the unborn son away or if it's a daughter to do as he pleases with her at a later date, is really awful. It makes me glad that Rosala actually stood up to him.

message 93: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Any progress Shin & Sumit?

message 94: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Almost finished chapter 11. Hope to finish chapter 14 by tomorrow.

*wonders why June has only 30 days*

message 95: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) so how is it? specially Rosala?

message 96: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments I love Rosala's courage. I still can't fathom how she thought of escaping to Arbonne and defy her husband's family by naming her son after her own father. Ultimate act of defiance! I'm proud of her!

message 97: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Too many spoilers coming through. :( also, how many chapters does the paperback version have?

message 98: by Em Lost In Books (last edited Jun 28, 2014 11:02AM) (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) yeah, I was shocked when I'd read that part. hats off to GGK for creating such wonderful female characters who shows so much courage and confidence in a male dominated world.

message 99: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments Sorry sorry! I completely forgot about you. :P

Not sure. E-book here.
