Kate S | 6459 comments Team Mega Finish Race

Objective: Be the first team to post for all 30 tasks in the RwS Spring Challenge.
Duration: March 1-April 30, 2017
Reward: Bonus points added to each member's overall score for the season (to be determined based on number of participants)
ETA:
First team to finish: 30 point bonus
Second team to finish: 20 point bonus
Third and Fourth teams: 10 point bonus

All bonus points will be awarded at the end of the season.

A few details:
All RwS Members are welcome to join this team challenge.
Sign ups will run from February 20-27, teams will be announced February 28.
As a team, you will need to read for and claim all 30 tasks in this season's challenge.
The first team to do so will win the highest number of bonus points.
Members who sign up to participate will be broken into equal teams in terms of numbers and typical reading patterns.
This is a team challenge and may require strategy and team work to accomplish.

Lagullande | 1131 comments I didn't participate in the last Team Challenge, so I'll be the first to throw my hat into the ring this time. Sounds like fun.

message 4: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments I'm in.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2595 comments I am interested in participating. I don't know how many tasks I will be able to get to. I repeat the same tasks.

message 6: by Cory Day (new)

Cory Day (cors36) | 1205 comments I'm coming back this season so I'll participate! It's doubtful my tally will be as high and quick as usual but I can still contribute :)

message 7: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5277 comments I will do this! It will help me keep to my goals.

message 8: by Deedee (last edited Feb 20, 2017 12:08PM) (new)

Deedee | 2279 comments I'm in! I read approximately 15 books per month (sometimes 10 sometimes 18 you know how it is). I often come close to finishing RWS and/or the sub-challenge but usually, like the Winter Challenge we're just finishing, fall 2-3 books short.

Sounds like fun!

message 9: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3270 comments I'm in too!

I was planning on reading a big fat book for April, but can move it to May. I've been a bit slow this Jan/Feb, but I normally read 10-12 books a month. I did actually get a mega finish in the fall (16), but normally my season is more like the present one - I'll finish with 25 tasks and 31/32 books.

message 10: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Homier (mtbluestocking) I will participate. I just joined RwS. I tend to read 4 - 7 books a month, but I know I will need to kick it up a bit here for this group. I can certainly contribute to a team.

Coralie | 2757 comments I'm in.

message 12: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments I am one of the slower readers here. Usually only about 4 or 5 a month. But with a big enough team, I can contribute. So sign me up.

Karin Tien wrote: "um. argh. ok. I'm in

@Tien hahahaha

To all - Normally, I am a keen team player, but this time I'm playing for ME as I have been packing in the books for games and challenges month after month for a year or so, frequently reading books I didn't like, although I also discovered some great books I'd have missed otherwise. That said, I'll be part of a team if it's okay to only read a few books. Tien and I were on the same team for 2 of those (and once on Shelfari a few years ago, which is how we met) so she was thinking I'd read a lot :).

So now I've just narrowed down the things I might be working toward once I see if I can do a grand finish this time ;). I will happily tell my team members what my plans are so that I can contribute accordingly, though.

message 18: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3104 comments I was thinking rather of your competitive streak, Karin ;D

I think when the teams are formed, then we can probably pick and choose between team members which tasks we'd like to read for and which tasks someone else can read for the team :)

Karin Tien wrote: "I was thinking rather of your competitive streak, Karin ;D

I'm being competitive, of course, just not in the big finish. I haven't changed my personality overnight :) I'm just adjusting what I do here since I'd love to pick at least one category in 2017.

message 20: by Lagullande (new)

Lagullande | 1131 comments Karin wrote: "I'm being competitive, of course, just not in the big finish...."

Karin, I'm super-competitive too about things - sometimes I manage to hide it on the outside but inside I just can't help it.

My strategy with RwS and SRC is to adjust my personal goals as I go along to make sure I always have a personal win ;-)

message 21: by Bea (new)

Bea Hmmm. I am torn. I really am feeling a bit pushed for March as I really want to do the sub-challenge this time. However, if I can be a slow reader on a team, I will give it a go.

Mods, if you have enough people without me...well, my feelings will not be hurt.

message 22: by Rosemary (last edited Feb 22, 2017 01:04AM) (new)

Rosemary | 4280 comments I will join :)

Just for clarification, does it mean somebody on the team has to finish the sub-challenge in 2 months, because otherwise nobody will have claimed 15.10? Or is it enough if the team as a whole claims 10 sub-challenge books?

ETA: I've decided I can't join in after all, much as I would love to - I've explained below.

message 23: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1174 comments And do the 15 point books have to fit into the same decade across the team's reading? Or do they just need to be ten books that we claimed for our own 15 point tasks? If A reads an award book from 1976 and B reads an award book from 1999 do they both qualify for the team completion?

message 24: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 1898 comments I would like to join, but would be a slow reader in March due to some family obligations.

It would be great if you could tell us more about how you are going to handle the 15 point tasks. Are we going to be able to use the books in our own plans?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14231 comments Rosemary wrote: "I will join :)

All 10 tasks of the sub-challenge have to be claimed, so one member of the team will have to finish. We'll try to make the teams large enough so that it isn't a burden - many hands make light work. You'll be able to have your own team thread to discuss your strategy.

Excellent! I agree. My personal win this time will be doing the mega finish even though I won't get the most points. I wasn't sure I could do it, but am going to try to get my 3 last books finished :).

Yes, this is a great part of teams.

message 28: by Louise Bro (new)

Louise Bro | 477 comments I'd like to sign up, please!
I've never read as much in a month as I did in the summer bingo for 2016, so I'm hoping to get a spike in my "Books read"-list.
I didn't participate at all during this winter challenge, but before that I think I've been reading pretty consistently from season to season.

Yikes! I thought about this last night (thanks for asking, Rosemary!)... I've got some thick books planned for AotD (!)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14231 comments Tien wrote: "I've got some thick books planned for AotD (!) "

This is where the thread for planning and strategizing will be valuable.

message 31: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3104 comments oh, there will be planning & strategising! I think my former Bingo team members can bear witness to my obsession in having everything mapped out just right ha ha ha

I think I may just find that part more fun...

message 32: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4280 comments I don't think I should join after all - I just signed a new work contract yesterday and I'm not sure how or when that will impact with extra pressure on my time. I think it's better if I don't commit to this, much as I would like to. I was actually looking forward to storming through AotD in 2 months!

I hope you all enjoy it, and I will be cheering you on!

(I edited my post above, but wanted to post again in case you have already started making a list, Elizabeth)

message 33: by Gabriel (new)

Gabriel Soll I'll join. I'm probably only good for two or three titles, but hopefully they are parts the team can use.

I'll start looking at my reading list and coming up with what fits where so far.

You certainly know how to whip a team into shape, Tien! (My kids always teased me about being a list maker too. So I completely understand your obsession!)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2595 comments You just put your organization skills to the test.

Relax, I've been on teams with you before, and I know for a fact that you are not a dictator--I haven't seen it yet. I love to strategize as well, so if you were, I didn't notice it ;) .

message 40: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments I am still not clear on the team AotD part. I thought that the team would come up with its own plan and read to that. Not so? The team completion will depend on one of the members completing their own plan so they can post a 15.10 completion? That puts a lot of pressure on one team member. And focuses the rest of the team on the 10 and 20 point tasks to the exclusion of the sub-challenge.

Louise Bro | 477 comments Tien wrote: "OMG, you guys make me sound like a dictator :D

Not even a little bit! But your enthusiasm for planning and my competitive streak had me reading more than I otherwise would have, so it was definitely a win for me.
I'd love to be on your team again, in this challenge or another one.

Anika | 2796 comments This sounds like so much fun! I'm in!
I've been M.I.A. for the past year (getting married and moving twice *really* gets in the way of one's reading), but I'm back and ready to play! I have only been reading about a book a week, though I used to read 2-3 a week and am hoping to get back to that...

ETA Oops, sorry mods, I keep forgetting to put these kinds of posts in the socializing thread.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3104 comments Aw thanks guys :)

If I ever step on anyone's toes, please speak up though so I know to tone it down.

itpdx wrote: "The team completion will depend on one of the members completing their own plan so they can post a 15.10 completion? That puts a lot of pressure on one team member."

That is also my understanding from Elizabeth's comment, "All 10 tasks of the sub-challenge have to be claimed, so one member of the team will have to finish."

However, I just thought that maybe for time leapers, they can read 15.2, 15.10, 15.5, etc if plans are posted in order of years?
Or for time travellers, can one team member reads 15.1-15.5 & a second team member reads 15.10-15.6 (starting at different ends)?

This is what I was hoping for, as a time leaper myself.

This is a good idea, if the mods agree to it. I am doing a time travel, definitely starting at 15.1; and my first 5 are very doable .

message 47: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1174 comments I also vote for being able to split the sub challenge between two people instead of it all being on one person. Plus without their plans needing to mesh. Since the liklihood of that is slim.

This is one of those times when we needed to reconsider my original thought and post of how this should work.

We have now decided than any 10 claims for sub-challenge points will qualify for the Team completing that portion of a Mega finish. You can workout as a team whether one member will read for the entire sub-challenge, or whether among you you will share the load.
