David Raz (davidraz) | 12797 comments Per this thread, may I suggest an addition to this page?

Something on the lines of:

"For a collection of works (e.g. short stories, poems, plays, essays), the original publication date of a collection should be set to the publication date of the most recently published included work. However, if the collection includes previously unpublished work (excluding introduction, afterword, index etc.) it should be set to the original publication date of the first edition of the collection."

Elizabeth (Alaska) That looks good, David. I might change it only a tad:

... to the most recent original publication date of the publication date of the most recently published included work. However, if the collection includes previously unpublished work (excluding introduction ...

David Raz (davidraz) | 12797 comments I'm sorry I'm new to this process, if no one objects to this, what is the process of adding it to the manual?

Staff reviews, then it happens (or not), but there is no schedule.

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments I can't resist bumping this old thread, since I really wish this practise could be either confirmed or rejected by staff (not sure if it has in the past?) and hopefully added to the Manual at some point in the future.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I'm about 99% certain that this has been confirmed by staff, but I have not recently done a search in the group to find where. I agree this should be added to the manual.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Although not specific to short story collections, these are 2 comments from Rivka that essentially address the issue.

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments Elizabeth, you're my hero! Thanks for finding the old threads. I've been working according to this practise for omnibuses but was unsure since I never could find it talked about by staff anywhere. Now I know for a fact I'm not doing it wrong. :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) And thank *you* for working hard at this. I think searching out those original pub dates is so time consuming. I don't know how many people appreciate it, but I certainly do and we use those dates in some of the challenges I participate in.
