Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland and a favorite of the unmarried King, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, she wants to open a shop and create delectable pastries. But for her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for a woman who could be a queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the King’s marriage proposal, she meets handsome and mysterious Jest. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into a secret courtship.

Cath is determined to choose her own destiny. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

Crisanda | 3 comments I put off reading this book for so long, but I'm determined to do the readalong this month. I love Marissa Meyer's writing, but I didn't love her other villain story Fairest, so I was a bit skeptical about this book. Also, I never cared much for Alice in Wonderland. But I've read about a third of the book so far and it's actually not too bad so far! But reviews say it gets too twisted in the second half, so let's see.

I just finished it and LOVED the ending!

Amanda (snugshelf) I loved and hated Heartless. Love because it was beautiful and romantic but hate because MY HEART IS IN PIECES ON THE GROUND.

Jordan Moore (jordanmouse) | 6 comments I really enjoyed this retelling! I actually love it enough to have a few different editions of it haha.
It also tore my heart apart. I sadly had a feeling it was coming, and knew there was no turning back. But I knew it was part of what made the Queen who she is and knew it had to come. Retellings are some of my favorite stories and Marissa Meyer is great at them!

Tweller83 (tweller) Listen to it, the actress that does the reading is fabulous! So good, loved the book, in part because of her performance.

Farren (mmmcookies) I liked the story, but sadly I wasn't wowed by it. I personally didn't care for the audio because the performance was so over the top and her character voices were quite high-pitched, but I get why so many people recommend listening to it. It just wasn't for me. You could always sample it first! I haven't read the Lunar Chronicles, so I can't compare Heartless to her other books.
