Shelly (shelly55021) | 8 comments A friend asked me if I knew of any books relating to height. She's got a daughter who is quite short for her age. She'd like to find a book (or a few) about how shortness is a main theme.

Any ideas?

There are several Middle Grade books about boys who are short, because the stereotype is that it matters more with boys. Often they're adventure stories, in which the boy proves that short doesn't matter, but courage and cleverness do.

There are probably quite a few books for girls about body image, about 'loving yourself just the way you are' sort of thing... some might focus too much on trying to help girls who don't think they're skinny enough or pretty enough, but some might draw the theme more universally. I remember seeing a couple of picture-books on the theme, but they were pretty preachy and boring.

There are *lots* of books for all ages about kids getting comfortable with their own special selves in a less specific way. For example The Mud Fairy.

Again, it's a stereotype, but Asian-American girls in books are often short, so simply looking for a character like that might get you some leads. Um, I do think there's one Asian-American girl character who is uncomfortable about how *tall* she is, but that might be interesting for your young friend, too.

Maybe you could track down a few biographies of real women (or men) who were short. Dolly Parton and Ruth Bader Ginsburg come to mind as two diverse exemplars, up to you to choose the ones the girl would be interested in.

For you and the girl's mom, there's this Listopia: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...
You might want to search the Lists for "body image."

How old is the girl? What does she read already? Is she in the US?

Shelly (shelly55021) | 8 comments Thank you, Cheryl. The girl in question is 11, I believe. She is a white Minnesotan. I'll share this with my friend.

Ok, given that demographic, everything I suggested fits, and I have no further thoughts. Good luck!

Brenda | 192 comments Short Might be a possibility. I have not read this yet to give you many details, but I have it on my TBR list.
