Excellent. Have been considering it and talking it over with hubby for about a year.

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments Wow! Wonderful! So far even my dad retiring has been wonderful. Summer childcare for us! We live on opposite sides of the country and my kids cherish that time with their grandparents. Enjoy it!!

message 16: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments Congratulations......I was offered an early retirement package just after coming back from a year of for breast cancer. Part of the package was guaranteed medical covered with no prexiting condition clause, so it was a no brainer. Not one to sit around, I got a job at a knitting store ---- which I loved. Now, however, I'm back at work, because we bought a "retirement" house. My husband pointed out that if went back for 4-5 years, we can then both retire vs him working for 10+ more years :-)

Enjoy!! I'm looking forward to my second retirement. Although I'm hoping to get a job at the local bookstore in where our other house is......I go in almost every time we go up and talk with the owner.

Same here! My husband has retirement in the crosshairs and it can't get here soon enough for him. I've told him don't expect me to retire any time soon. I'm still having way too much fun in my career. LOL

message 19: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tstan) | 1261 comments I think there's a blurb going around that fits me: something about not being able to retire until just before the luncheon at my funeral.

message 20: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments What do you all do that you don't WANT to retire from? Curious for a friend...

message 21: by Amy (new)

Yay! Congrats! My sister retired at the end of last year and she's really happy. I hope you'll be just as happy!

message 26: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8419 comments I always assumed I'd be like my mother and work into my 70s. But my husband is 10 years older than I am, and the effects of his wounds suffered in Vietnam don't get better with age. I want to spend time with him enjoying life without the restrictions of having to show up for work every day. I've reached "full retirement age" so I decided to do it now.

That being said, I'll probably find a little part-time job ... even a volunteer one ... just to keep active and be around people. I love my husband, but we're not ones to stay joined at the hip all day, every day.

I hope so, too ... but I'm thinking that with my long commute eliminated my # of books read might DEcrease ... because I won't be listening to as many audios.

I work part-time in the local public library and I absolutely love my job. Retirement is on the horizon...but not yet.

Congratulations! Great choice; you can't rewind the clock, so enjoy the time you have and a part time job sounds like a perfect way not to be joined at the hip all day every day (my husband and I can't be joined at the hip all day every day, either).

Someday, if I can ever afford to retire (and it can't come soon enough for me... but if I go by the traditional age, I have 21 years to go!!!), I will likely volunteer, as well. I love my volunteering!

message 33: by punxsygal (new)

punxsygal | 306 comments Great decision, BC. I retired late in 2009 and haven't regretted it. Have enjoyed reconnecting with my crafty side and made a whole new group of friends as a result, as well as taken up a couple of out-of-doors hobbies which puts me out in the fresh air and sunshine. Enjoy the days with your husband.

I think of you every time I drive past Landmark!

That's awesome BC!!! Enjoy your retirement.
After my mom retired she used to "work" for books at a local used bookstore. Only like once a week-but she gets free books!

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2596 comments Congratulations! I've been retired since 2010 and I love it! I also loved my career as a librarian (Public Library Director actually, at 3 libraries over the years). I loved the atmosphere, the staff, the public. I topped my career with building a brand new library and ran it for 3 years after opening. I had always thought I'd miss it and volunteer in a library. I got into quilting and made lots of new friends, got my hands back into the dirt with my gardening, and went back to bowling after about 40 years! I love retirement. I'm so busy, my hubby and I don't spend much time joined at the hip but when we want to go camping/RVing, I'm able to just go and not make arrangements for vacation time. We go about once a month! I hope you have as much fun as I'm having.

I do a lot more walking after retirement and it's a great way to get those audios in. I'm actually listening to more than I did while commuting.
