What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for books and literature, where a character is digging a hole into the ground for whatever reason (religious, no reason, adventure)

or a book about someone doing an unusual task and how their souroundings/ society reacts.

The first book that came to my mind way "Tunnels" by Roderick Gordon (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...). It is a children's or YA series, I'm not entirely sure. It all starts with people digging, which sets of a whole series of adventures.

I believe this should be in Requests for Books in General since you are not looking for a single specific book, but I don't know how to fix it (or if I even could). I'm sure a mod will fix it soon.

For the second part of your request about an unusual task: in Shoeless Joe the protagonist builds a baseball field in his corn field.

In The Martian, Mark Watney has to dig up a small nuclear reactor. It's a minor point, but important since he needs the reactor.

The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill is the true story the movie was based on, so it deals quite a bit with the logistics of digging your way out of a Nazi POW camp.

Digger by Joseph Flynn is about a Vietnam vet who has worked with other vets to get over their PTSD from tunnel fighting by digging a network of tunnels under their small town. Weird book, but interesting.

There's a children's book called "Sam and Dave Dig a Hole" that is a really cute book. They dig to find something wonderful, and you can see in the illustrations that they keep missing buried treasure. The ending has a funny twist.

Holes I'm just going to re-recommend/upvote this book. The entire premise is based on people digging holes and it's a book that is full of unusual/quirky happenings.
